That said Winnipeggers have a propensity to dismiss almost everything even remotely progressive. How in God's name did we become this way?

frick. The whole "we don't need it" mentallity is really far fetched already in this city.

Did Toronto and Calgary NEED their tourist towers?
Did Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal NEED the Olympics?
Does Edmonton NEED to build a new arena and expand the LRT system?

Extra amenities are what build a city's reputation and help to enhance it's profile.

Do we NEED to take vacations every once in a while?
Where do we draw the line?

Ten or 12 home games a year can't make pro football stand on its own two feet with the taxpayer subsidizing it. User pay? No way! Make the public pay! That's the fair way of doing things.
Did anyone know that before it was built?

I remember the incredible angst when the old arena needed to be expanded to accommodate hockey. This is what we do. We are a city of really old people that hate change.

Winnipeggers are conservative by nature. We like to keep our taxes LOW. Ask around if you don't believe me.

There were some bleeding heart whiners and socialists wanting to keep the old Eaton's builiding. Fortunately, a business plan came forward and today we have the very successful MTS Centre, 19th busiest concert venue in the world, apparently. I don't know, but I would imagine they expected to pay back the tax dollars in a few years, which they did.

And yet, we have the highest taxes in the land. Maybe only second highest to Quebec. But the highest in Canada.

Care to guess why? It's the friggin' entitlements, including welfare and the taxpayer subsidizing things that most of them don't use.
You can either keep on doing things the same way and maintaining high taxes while the public is screaming for relief or you can say NO MORE! I know where I stand...

Public consultation is a waste of time. You'd be hard pressed to build ANYTHING without finding a few people who have valid reasons for not wanting it.

Eaton's is a great example. Had those pro-Eatons idiots had there way, an Arboreum would have stood where the MTS Centre is now.

Thankfully, some the seniors who opposed their coffee shop getting torn down have since passed on.

kidding on that last paragraph, of course.

I don't see why anyone is complaining about money and minority support for the stadium.

The government is putting some money in up front. They could just have easily gone and asked for it from benefactors and donations...but instead are looking at the million (est) people in the surrounding area who will use it.

Bombers? Sure...and the ticket sales just pay the salaries. The REAL money is made on concessions.
Bisons? Of course..and the University Crows (no matter how broke they cry) spend money...lots of money.

This stadium has a dome (removable) which means year-round use.
It also has a new mult-sport centre attached, and a state-of-the-art training facility. Which will be rented/used by both the Bisons, Universities, and other private clubs.

There will inevitably be more retail, food, etc. erected in that area, to take advantage of the increased traffic flow. More taxes coming in, more money to "pay back" the people.

The new stadium will be bigger than the current one...so that means more people to take care of it, more jobs, more vendors, more more more.

I find it amusing that some of you are comparing the MTS Centre and how it's already "paid" for itself and how great that venture was, but this will provide the same type of capital...and it's a bad idea?

I think the ONLY downside I can see is the Bombers being put on the table...but even that is (supposedly) written with a guarantee that the franchise will NEVER leave Winnipeg/Manitoba. So the team is not going anywhere...the paperwork is.

I've been to the stadium here a few times...even played a bit on the field (touch football)...and it's old...ready to be replaced.

Philadelphia had the same kind of screaming, kicking, whining as this when they were replacing Veteran's Stadium...a Philadelphia ICON for decades...yet noone today who has been in the new stadium would ever complain about anything more than the nostalgia...and if all you do is live in nostalgia...eventually you just get left behind in history.

Probably similar words were said about the Long Gun Registry.
Trust government. Especially when Gary Doer is involved.
