I like the melting pot idea, and the notwithstanding clause is not used very ofter.
I am sure that it was put in to give Quebec the ability to not be ganged up on by the other 12 provinces!!
Actually, it was put in at the bequest of several premiers, most notably: Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

:-(You didn't read my link.Anyways, it doesn't really matter. The Charter of Rights contains a notwithstanding provision applicable to fundamental freedoms, legal rights and equality rights... the very rights it was supposed to protect.

It's like promising to remain forever faithful to your spouse ... but reserving the right to change your mind if someone else comes along.

Did some checking on the notwithstanding clause, and someone rote that it was to protect Quebec from being outvoted by the other 49 provinces!

I don't think that it really mattered, because I do not believe that Quebec signed on !

I've been thinking about this for a long time.

Why don't the 9 provinces who did sign get together and have a referendum.

Question: Since Quebec has not signed the constitution, should Quebec be allowed to remain a part of Canada.

YES or NO.

if the majority is YES then fine, let em stay as is. if the majority is NO then The 9 Premiers should ask the PM to kick Quebec out of our federation, and take their share of the debt with them.

I wonder if Harper would try that?
He desperately needs Quebec seats to get a majority!

Do you think He could threaten Quebec? lol

What a great idea to get Quebec to join the other 49 provinces!

ahh but here is the problem
7 out of 10 provinces representing 70% of the population are required for something like that.
Quebec because of its population would have to vote against itself.

Well if 9 provinces vote NO. then its good bye Quebec.

We'll let them split with what they had pre-confederation plus we will allow them to pay their portion of Canada's total debt. As far as Quebec's provincial debt, they can take care of that themselves.

Then we can give to the Natives of Canada the rest of the huge land mass between Labrador and Ontario sans The 2km chunk of Quebec along the ST/ Laurence seaway from Ontario to Quebec City.

1867 map of Canada's Confederation
Canadian Provinces
Light Brown = Quebec
Pink = New Brunswick
Dark Brown = Nova Scotia
Green = Ontario

Yellow = British possessions

Damn the image of the map will not appear for me.

Lets take the plunge and enter into negotiations with the US Government and become States. We can be the 51(MB), 52(SK), 53(AB) and 54th (BC) states. At least we will have an equal say in the Senate, and will be more democratic than we are now.

You are shooting for the wrong date.
You really need to go back to about 1763.
http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/archives/historical/mcr_2306?maxwidth=1200&maxheight=1000&mode=navigator&upperleftx=0&upperlefty=0&lowerrightx=4288&lowerrighty=3424&mag=0.0625
2K is sorta realistic as the French originally settled very narrow and very long farms. So that each farmer could have access to the river or stream that the farms were up against. But probably more like 10K was even more realistic by 1763.

Heh, Stephane Dion wasn`t the best Liberal leader, but he`s a hard man to argue against with respect to separation.

His response to Layton supporting 50% +1 for separation:

" If 50% +1 is considered a 'clear majority', then Mr. Layton should explain what constitutes an 'unclear majority"

BAM!
