I like the way Balsillie is going about this....it's about time we had some rich Canadian's buying back our teams and moving them to hockey markets that actauly are hockey markets!

There is only so much 5 people can do though

Absolutely....but how many teams do you think we could support up here? Right now we have six....Balsillie will probably be bringing back the 7th.

LOL oh man Bettman sure can be funny

"“We generally try to avoid relocating franchises unless you absolutely have to,” he said. “We think when a franchise is in trouble, you try and fix the problems. That’s what we did in Pittsburgh and Ottawa and Buffalo prior to our work stoppage. That’s what we did when the perception was that five out of the six Canadian franchises around the turn of the century were in trouble. We fixed the problems. We don’t run out on cities.”"

I'll bet even Betman's wife thinks he's a jerk.

The CBC site had well over a hundred responses (~160) with many grasping on that very comment suggesting Bettman looks after American teams and to go ask Winnipeg and Quebec City fans.

Bettman is there cause we sold control of the league to the Americans, lets not forget that time we take it back before they kill it all.

When the expansion went past the original teams we gave up control as part of the deal after all they were going to save the league and make it flourish . Right .

"Whether or not Mr. Moyes even had the authority to file the bankruptcy petition is something we're going to get into,""

thats the part I dont understand..him and his wife own 75% of the team and have dumped over 300 million of their own money into it to keep it running at a loss....yet he has no authority to declare bankruptcy?

yeah that just real smart.

The legal aspects of the NHL are very complex...it's a field day for lawyers.

What do you suppose the other owners think when they read such inflammatory remarks?

Whoa. Balsillie is well named: he sure has nads to demand this:
Mr. Balsillie's US$212.5-million offer is contingent on the strict condition the team be relocated to Hamilton -- and that he not be forced to pay millions of dollars in compensation to the Toronto Maple Leafs for encroaching on their exclusive 80-kilometre territorial rights, as granted by the NHL's bylaws.

That will never go. He may have made a smart move to force the NHL to let him buy and move the team. But to demand no compensation for territorial rights? Never.

Small market teams are pretty iffy, financially! Edmonton and calgary have over 300,000 more people to choose from and I think our local reputation for not spending money is probably a well earned reputaion!
What were out ticket prices then, when the last payroll year was about 16 million ,if what was reported was accurate.
I remember Shenkarow reporting that he expeceted the payroll to be up at over $30 million.

I think Betman is telling the owners that an expansion team is worth $400M in the same market, so he is against moving the team, naturally. Whether the owners believe him is another thing. I don't think it's worth that much myself, but what do I know.

Should toronto care? hell no.. its quite obvious the toronto fans are raving maniacs committed to the team no matter what.
