Betman would make oodles of money in Hamilton.

Bettman would make a profit in Halifax or Saskatoon compared with Phoenix, Nashville, Tampa Bay and Atlanta. Maybe not the biggest profits in the league, but better than down south.

Even break even for the last 13 years would look real good to the Coyotes. Compared with losing $300 million in that same time frame...

TV had a couple of Feenix Fans interviewed. The kid said that hockey wasn't even on the radar of most guys in his town. Not even thought about.

Betman needs to rethink his position on this. Duh.

Not altogether surprising eh? And why would it? Those kids are raise on baseball and basketball and motherhood and apple pie. ICE hockey was totally foreign to them.

The sport is great and it wins over fans. But it takes generations to develop a passion. When money is short and one has to choose which passion to indulge you default to motherhood and apple pie...

And too, it also helps if you play it as a kid.

Strictly from a marketing point of view, Betman is an ass...a clueless egotist that isn't as smart as some people believe.

plus one would have to imagine there is not many outdoor free rinks to practice on in Phoenix...

LOL, have a chuckle this wonderfully balmy Friday morning everyone!
Five reasons Gary Bettman doesn't like Jim Balsillie and wants him barred from the NHL old boys club:
1) Dues. Balsillie should have to start small, in the NBA, like other important people.
2) Envy. Balsillie has promised Wayne
Gretzky that if he can relocate the Phoenix Coyotes, he will build a
new arena and name it after the Great One's father, Walter.
Bettman is steamed because he can't even get Wayne Gretzky's autograph.
3) Athleticism. Balsillie actually can play hockey. Bettman is still learning to drive a Zamboni.
4) Jealously. Balsillie has been
inducted into the Order of the Business Hall of Fame. In January 2005,
Business Week named Bettman one of the worst five executives.
5) Meanness. Balsillie makes fun of
Bettman because the commish's middle name is Bruce and he was born in
Queens. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

High School football brings out three times as many fans as hockey does. Betman is an a$$hole. He figures (correctly) that Americans, on the whole, want to watch Americans play Americans, and not a foreign team (Canadians). However, he fails to understand that Americans, on the whole, don't watch hockey. Where they do, it's the Northern states, where hockey is played by youngsters.

My take anyway....

Not sure about that. I think he would still be against bringing a team to Winnipeg. But I heard he thinks Hamilton is a sure bet.

My basic thoughts on an NHL team in Winnipeg remains pretty much the same...I very much doubt that the team generates more than the $40 M it takes out of our economy. Seems the team here cannot exist without government handouts (concessions). 'zit.Wink

Hehe. Fair enough. And that is why I would choose someone who is a little more pro active for Winnipeg, to find the best solution to make a team happen in the city and be completely economically successful WITHOUT relying on gov't. handouts. Someone who believes in Winnipeg.

Just my take on things. It can happen; you just need the right people to get the ball rolling.

Problem is that we have an ingrained culture here that make it (almost) mandatory to go to the government for money for damn near anything big around here.

Corporate welfare is still welfare to me.

That mentality can't and won't last much longer. Hence the needing the right people to get involved.

Maybe Winnipeg and Hamilton can share the team??? :-) Move between cities each month. Or just set up a holographic projector in the MTS centre to watch the game being played in Hamiliton!

Nah. The city deserves better than that. We can support our own team without relying on Southern Ontario to prop us up.

I wish I could support your enthusiasm.
But we can not even support our necessities (infrastucture, health, etc.) without the federal transfer of payments.

Infrastructure has nothing to do with hockey, and shouldn't be brought up at all. Every city in the world has infrastructure problems except Lockport Manitoba.
This Balsille guy is the perfect choice for an owner! he has unlimited funds, and loves the game, and wants to own 33 young strong, in very good condition males!

I think we could were our Government more effective. Just look at the decision making on the floodway and the Hydro east side west side debacles. And for you Triniman, the HRM Museum...
