OTTAWA -- The double-double and cruller have it over the latté and biscotti hands down, a new poll suggests.

The survey suggests that fans of the iconic Tim Hortons brand -- which has outlets from Kelowna to Kandahar -- outnumber Starbucks people 4-1.

And it indicates that Tim Hortons' popularity cuts across political lines and unites old and young, rich and poor.

Stephen Harper was labelled the Tim Hortons prime minister by MacLean's in 2006, but the poll results suggest that the coffee shops draw in roughly equal proportions from every political party.

Folklore portrays the average Tim's customer as a pickup-driving Everyman in a flannel shirt and baseball cap who scorns frappucinos, isn't sure what a latté is and embraces hockey and hunting.

The poll suggests, though, that the well-off Tory is almost as likely to drop in to Tim's as the blue-collar New Democrat or the downtown Liberal.

The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey found 49 per cent of respondents called themselves Tim Hortons people, as opposed to 12 per cent who preferred Starbucks.

About 26 per cent chose neither company and 11 per said they didn't drink coffee.

The same rough 50-10 split showed up when Tim's customers were asked about their political preferences.

Among those calling themselves Conservatives, 53 per cent went with Tim Hortons and 10 per cent chose Starbucks. Among Liberals, the divide was 49-13. For the NDP, it was 54-11 in favour of Tim's, the Greens split 50-14 for Tim's and BQ supporters divided 44-12.

I am not a coffee drinker, but if I do decide to have some coffee-flavoured beverage, I like the fraps or macchiatos at Starbucks.

You should probably have your head examined Wink or your tongue replaced.

no...they don't ALL have drivethrus...but since it only takes them about 10seconds vs. 4 minutes to make a coffee...for them to have them at all is more reasonable Wink.

Tim Hortons is kicking Starbucks in just about every region it is located. Last I heard Timmies owned 63% of the Canadian coffee market, compared to Starbucks 9%. Last I hearrd Timmies was making inroads in the US too, often beating out Starbucks in their own country.

Yeah, there's nothing like a nice tall cup of coffee to get the day started. I'll take a double sugar, double crack....err...creme! Yeah, creme! That's the stuff! Shocked

Starbucks does taste burnt....but that's how many people say Coffee was intended to taste, because that's it's "full flavor".....

Whatever. Time to invest in some Timmy's stock!

Well I know they don't all have drive thrus BUT the next closest one is like two minutes away! Plus I don't mind waiting four minutes for a coffee, a latte, a nice iced tea lemonade. Oh the selection Starbucks has. (plus I'd like to mention that alot of my friends work there, therefore it makes the wait much easier! Very Happy )

As for getting my head examined, it's too late, I love over priced, brand name ANYTHING!!!

I'll take coffee from The Fyxx or Pastry Castle over Horton's or Starbucks any day.

How do you wait 10-15 minutes for drip coffee?

Most people I know ordering drip coffee from Starbucks get it right away.

Could it have been one of their specialty coffees? Plus an inexplicable line up?

Ummm a specialty coffee takes forever and that is what I meant. I tried the drip coffee and it tastes like it's burnt.

$4 coffees. No, thanks. I brew gourmet coffee at home and at the office. Yum!
