Ken Waddell writes at the manitobapost.com

Ken uses the arguement that most crime happens in Areas where NDP are elected as the reasoning behind this leap of logic.

I guess Ken is forgetting two things.
Most Crime happens in low income areas
Low income areas elect NDP.

nice twist though Ken

Excerpted from ManitobaPost blog......
"The answer may be astonishingly simple. If the NDP government
doesn't clamp down on gangs, is it because the gangs, the criminal
element in Manitoba, have an unspoken understanding with the
government. Perhaps the government goes easy on gangs and only acts on
some severe cases like murder. In turn, the gangs make sure that their
support, the support of everybody they touch, goes to the government."

That is a stretch dudes.....no wonder we are taught in persuasive discourse that deductive reasoning is inherently flawed for several reasons.

This LTE from the Winnipeg Sun explains an awful lot about what is wrong with our justice system.
No catch, rot and release

Re: 'Freedoms taken away,' Letters to the editor, July 29.

If people believe a simple law and order policy works with gangs then they obviously don't know what they're talking about. Taking a gang member off the streets and putting them into prison for five years to just be put back out onto the streets doesn't work.

Prison is not the only answer. When are people going to get it? Putting a gang member in a cell to rot for years and then releasing him is costing us millions of dollars. I would rather see my tax money go towards rehabilitating the offender, providing some kind of job training, and at least the hope of a future when he/she is released.

Stacey Franklin

Winnipeg

Some good food for thought.

Stacey suggests we "don't know what they're talking about" when it is suggested we throw these punks into jail and let 'em rot.

Holy moley. How is our system working for us now? They don't get sent to jail until they're convicted 20 times to begin with. Then they only have to serve part of their sentence when they do.

Rehab my a$$. How does this rocket surgeon suggest we do that?

Stacey and people of her ilk needs to give their collective heads a shake.

Perhaps these professional criminals do cost us millions when they are released, so the obvious answer is to not release them. Duh.

When criminals are in jail the public is safe. However, the "criminal industry" does not make as much money, so they want these people on the streets...in what the "criminal industry" calls "programs".

Those are very easy dots to connect in my books.

"at least the hope of a future when he/she is released"

I wonder if Stacey also wants us to bring people back from the dead that the gang members have killed.. you know so that they can have a future too?

OOO I know lets use Stacey's logic but just a little twisted.

She does NOT want gang members to simply rot in jail and then be released.
We had said 75K per year to house an inmate.
She uses 5 years as a number for some reason ( HAH if only some of these guys went away that long)

Lets instead just pay the criminals 75K for every year that they are sentenced to. PROVIDED... that they use the money to move next door to Stacey.
75K * 5 years = 375K. Which should be able to buy a home in most areas of the city.
Stacey can spend her evening and weekends talking to the criminals letting them know how much she loves them. That should turn them around real quick.

It would be awesome we would have defense lawyers begging for the most amount of time possible and the crown would be advocating for the least amount of time ( oh wait the crown does that now.. no change there I guess )

Lets just put STacey in jail, without access to writing LTE's, and then we'd all be happier. Smile

If what DeanK states is true, "that most crimes are in low income areas", why don't we eliminate those areas??

There would not be enough money to do so.
