Manitoba Health is encouraging MRI technicians to work overtime on weekends in order to reduce a backlog of patients that has swelled the maximum wait time for the diagnostic test to a provincial average of 19 weeks, nearly four times what it was less than two years ago.

Health Minister Theresa Oswald said yesterday that she and health officials agreed a few weeks ago to make more money available to pay overtime and hire new technicians so that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners could be run on the weekends.

Oswald was responding to a Winnipeg Sun story that revealed wait times for the diagnostic test now stand at an average of 19 weeks, up from 13 weeks in November 2008 and five weeks in November 2007. In 1999, the wait was 32 weeks, Oswald noted.

Oswald said the demand for MRIs increased sharply after the government allowed family doctors to order the tests beginning in November 2007. Previously only specialists had been allowed to order them.

"This was predictable," said Tory health critic Myrna Driedger. "You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know these numbers would spike when you allow more doctors to order them. Why didn't they plan for it?"

Rather than pay for overtime, and given that wait times are growing, why not simply hire more technicians and increase the hours served?

And this was predictable: "In 1999, the wait was 32 weeks, Oswald noted.". I swear, if the NDP were to stay in power another 10 years (shudder) they will still be sprouting that mantra?

Why is it the NDP keep going there? Do note the huge increase in transfer payments since 1999. Do they ever place any improvements in health care in that context?

How do they explain that hallway medicine is still a huge problem in Manitoba despite the 10 years and increased transfer payments?

Why don't Manitobans get this and keep reelecting these people? Their incompetence grows in leaps and bounds every single day.

And yet McFadyen is strangely quiet.

Fortunately this has never been spewed by a'dipper around me. Because that statement made in my presence = punch in the head.
Yet istead of seeing it for what it is "we are so useless, we have to blame a government of 10 years ago and can't take responsibility for our flaws", Manitobans ignore it.
And we wonder where this culture of lack of personal responsibility comes from?

As some one who,s wife did work in the system till a while ago , there is a hierarchy that is out of control. They are spending money on renovating buildings at a no holds barred rate just for chair sitters and pencil pushers .
Her program was told that for 23 yrs there was no money to air condition the building or give her a working elevator . Then they are told to move so that the WRHA can move in and There is a new elevator put in and there is air, new carpet and fully renovated for them including a kitchen . After all we do not want their staff to have to walk to far for lunch .

Frankly, I don't think he's premier material. He's a dud, as is his party.

We desperately need a new political party, one that will make the difficult choices to set the Province on a course for prosperity. They should start by cutting the size of government.

We need to make Manitoba a "have" province so that our taxes go to "have-not" provinces. That would be a great sign of prosperity. Enough of these transfer payments!

So you've abandoned all hope and have accepted welfare in perpetuity?

Does that sound familiar? Too many people accept welfare as a way of life and do nothing to pull themselves out of poverty. What a hopeless and wasted existence that must be.

Many on the other hand, feel it is best to strive and work for better. Only with that mindset will we become a prosperous province that simply does not need federal welfare payments.

Unfortunately too many Manitobans think as you do Pavolo. That's a pity.

Let's be prosperous. It starts with the right attitude.

Its called having vision, something you can work towards, something that the NDP and the rest of the commie bastards don't have and never will have and try desperately to kill within others. Instead of teaching kids to have ambition and work towards a dream, our school system teaches them communist values, that developing your skill and knowledge and turning it into personal wealth is a bad thing, that you should take up the cause of the underprivileged and underfunded and underpaid, and anything less is greed. That what our problem is.

My bet is a particular NDP stronghold area in the next election.

They probably accepted a lot of optional and unnecessary cases to be scanned, who will have longer wait times as they get slotted in when no real case needs to get screened.

You mean as people who are waiting for scans just up and die, then others can move up on the list?

Who cares about this provincial governments useless political rhetoric anymore - it's not worthy of comment. They don't deserve to be engaged - they need to be ignored/circumvented. Who wants to join me in buying 2 MRI machines and setting up downtown? Let them respond/defend that action - it's indefensible. The government shouldn't be running (let alone monopolizing) any industry. The results are in. We require/demand private competition to bring economic perspective to efficiency/costs. How does the US Postal service lose 9 billion a year and Fed-Ex make 9 Billion? At least the American's have the gonad's to stand up and reject big-government. Look for a revolt before they lay down and accept public healthcare. The town-hall's are getting hotter by the day. So again - who wants to join me in buying two MRI machines and plow past the real problem - bureaucracy?

Fedex makes $9B because they charge obscene rates for shipping and only deal in markets where they can make a large profit. If US Postal stopped delivering letters and focused on only high-margin shipping they could make money easily as well. No one looking to make a profit would deliver individual letters at the rates they do. That's why it's offered by a government funded service. If they weren't doing it, no one would be. Next you'll be complaining that the government spends money by fixing roads while construction companies make money by building stuff so obviously the government must be just doing it inefficiently.

You make a good point umcrouc0. However, Canada Post shows a profit. And Canada has a much more rural base to deliver to...

To your point about "obscene" profits... How so? If the rates were so outrageous people simply would not use the service. And there is a fair bit of competition out there.

Companies like FedEx and UPS grew so big because there was a demand that post offices were not meeting. And as private companies they have incentives to streamline their business and improve productivity that maybe the average government run organizations do not appreciate.

That's why governments ought not be in business.
