I would just like to take time and recognize our countries Aboriginals. For thousands of years, they inhabited North America, and lived off the land with rather ease. It is unfortunate that our Native peoples had to endure 500 years of persecution and borderline genocide perpetrated by the European settlers.

Many close minded people want the natives to "snap out of it" and forget the past. It is not easy to do. When you have your land taken away from you, have your population diminished by European disease (smallpox), and confined to reservations, you suffered greatly.

When we tried to impose our cuture on your young, by removing them from loving families, only to try and erase their native heritage and learn "European" values, it tore families apart, and created wounds that have yet to heal. You coped by abusing alcohol and other substances to forget.

I, for one, would like to take this opportunity as a Canadian with European background, to apologize for what my ancestors did to your people. You were too proud to accept the settlers way of life, and had to endure discrimination over housing, employment, and education when you did try to 'assimilate.'

The government tries to make things right by throwing money at you. However, money does not bring healing, nor does it bring happiness. You deserve better. Non-Aboriginal Canadians need to understand your culture and way of life. We owe it to you.

So I dedicate this song to all of you. God bless our Natives, and forgive us for our past mistakes.

WTF?

Anyone think that'll help?

Whatever. Time to snap out of it. The world sucks. sh1t happened. Now move on for Gawd's sake and become a contributing part of Canadian society...

Too bad if this comes across as insensitive. I'm tired of all the crap perpetrated on Canadian society by a culture that seems incapable of, or worse, unwilling to helping themselves.

Snap out of it? I couldn't agree more. Let's look forward rather than backwards.

Of course, there's going to be a lot more apologizing going on, once they build that monument at the Forks to remember the human rights abuses against peoples like the aboringials.

You are right.

We should just ignore the problem, and I'm sure it will go away.

I think enough molly coddling has happened now it is time for the aboriginals to either sink or swim. Atrocities have happened to almost every culture on this planet, does that mean we should all hold onto what happened instead of moving forward? I say enough already. I say pay them outright and no more Indian Affairs, let them govern themselves and when the money runs out then too fricken bad.

Or... all reserves are simply incorporated into villages, towns, RMs.
They all start paying taxes.

How will they pay taxes if they aren't working? I say pay them out and cut all ties. They either make it or they don't....survival of the fittest.

What are you saying? That hunting and fishing won't cut it in this day and age? That they themselves will have to change their historical methods (just like everyone else did) in order to survive?

That's a good thing imo.

hunting and fishing will easily sustain the lifestyle that they had prior to Europeans coming to this land.

Of course I'm right. But where did I say ignore the problem? Your post was an apology. How will that help?

Come on. That is such a self-righteous and pompous post and you think it'll somehow help?

Post something that will help the matter and then judge the response it elicits...

No one has the solution! The governments have been looking after the aboriginals for 130 years and have they got it right? The aboriginal population is expanding at triple the rate of the rest of the country. They have been guaranteed the right to live in poverty, in crappy housing, with an inferior education, and most of all with 87% of them having no chance, no hope!
Tax them? You don't pay tax if you have negligible income! Tax the ones that have fetal alcohol , that commit suicide? That sniff gasoline to try and avoid watching Oprah on TV.
There is nothing that has been proposed that has worked, and the system of giving them enough money to live well below the poverty line is working just great!
I say ship them all to Regina, for a fee, and then block the highways coming back, and cancel all bus service bask from Regina!

BULLSHIT!

everyone can move and everyone can take education that will enable them to be a productive member of the workforce.

Ever read the Book of Tao? My favorite saying from it is "wise men seek solutions. The ignorant cast only blame."

I want to hear how you would deal with the Aboriginal issue facing Winnipeg. Rather than bash my posts, why not indicate what you would do differently than the Government is currently handling this dilemma?

stop treating aboriginals as a whole as unique people with unique problems. treat them exactly the same as everyone else.
