I need motivation to start a regular workout routine again. I was working out for 6 months usually 5 times a week, 2 hours a day, until I started Boxing at the Pan Am Boxing Club in October, and pinched a Sciatic Nerve in my back. I was out for 3-4 weeks, and I have just been lazy over the holidays.

I want to get back in shape. I need motivation. Anyone else struggling with this dilemma?

Well.....I try to get at least 1-2 hours in a day.

I usually hit the gym at noon for an hour every day, and then various sports throughout the week.

On that note, gotta run to the gym Smile....

Go commit a crime. Spend some time in jail working out 6-8 hours per day.

In jail you have the time, but in real life, 2 hours at 5 times a week is too much imo. You may be setting yourself up for failure doing too many days and hours.

Set a schedule and stick to it.

Not really.

4 hours a day would be setting yourself up for failure.

My workout used to consist of:

-15 min on the treadmill to get blood flowing in the muscles
-10 min of stretching to avoid injury
-60 min of weight training
-30 to 40 minute swim after weights.

On occasion I just swam or did weights only, but for the most part this was my workout. If you work 9-5, you eat at 6, then hit the gym for 7. Then leave at 9:30. You will be home for 10, and realexed for bed time! Smile

I keep my workouts ultra short. For example:
- warm up by walking to the gym from the office.
- 5-10 minutes stretching
- 3 different weight exercises, 3-4 sets each.
- some abs
- go back to the office.

I find that once I start working out I can feel it my muscles the next day, and that feeling makes me what to go back and do more. It's self-motivating, in a way.

Yes it is. It's the first step that is most difficult. Maybe I should unhook my internet..lol.

I remember when I was Treeplanting in BC ten years ago. I went out there in ok shape, and came back with legs the size of logs, and a six pack. Having a job that pushes your physical limitations heps.

Like St Norberter I have a summer and winter routine
winter
gym 6 days a week
various cardio for a min of 30 minutes 3 days a week,
resistance/weights 3 days a week for 30-45 minutes,
pilates class 1 day a week
soccer 1-2 nights a week.

summer
cycle to (12 km) and from work/gym (20 km) 4 days a week with a longer ride on Sundays
gym 4 days a week
resistance/weights 3 days a week for 30-45 minutes
pilates class 1 day a week
soccer 1 night a week.

It might seem like a lot but I work from 7:30 to 4, at the gym by 4:45 (summer and winter, bike or car) and home by 7 pm for dinner. Because my kids are grown I don't have to worry about their extra curricular activities to drive to and when there is something that takes me away from my work out schedule, I will make it up by walking at lunch changing my schedule to fit my day. It does become a routine part of your daily life. What I found that helped to get me motivated to get back after an injury is to make an "appointment" with yourself to go to the gym; that way I felt obligated to keep that "appointment" and the routine came back very quickly.

Ahhhh...

I feel sooo much better after working out at the Pan Am Pool for an hour. I only did 20 mins in the pool itself, since it was way too busy to enjoy a good swim. I hit the weight room for 40 mins and did legs and arms.

It helps when you hear what others do to keep in shape, as it motivates me to do the same. Thanks, Sandbox! Smile
