Bombers hire Joe Mack as VP football operations

By: Gary Lawless and Ed Tait

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have called a major press conference for Friday at 10 a.m. where they'll announce Joe Mack as their new vice-president of football operations.

Mack, the former Blue Bomber player personnel director from 1984-87, is in Winnipeg and is expected to be unveiled to the city.

Mack exited the CFL to work in the NFL, with the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins ('89-'94; including 1991 Super Bowl champions) then as the assistant GM of the expansion Carolina Panthers ('94-'97) and the Cleveland Browns director of football operations ('98-01).

The skinny: Mack has extensive background in personnel and is a winner, having won with the Bombers and Redskins. Also has knowledge on building franchises from the ground up, working with the Panthers in their infancy and having been assigned by former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue to help with the restart of the Browns.

Joe Mack has been out of football since 2001, hopefully he's not out of touch with today's CFL like Kelly was.

There is no way anyone could be as out-of-touch as kelly...

But consider that Mack has had real successful experience managing at the professional level.

And it's doubtful Mack will be as big an arrogant jerk as was kelly.

He's already miles ahead of his predecessor.

He hasn't worked in the CFL since 1987 either, but that's not an issue imo. His skill set requirements are in a totally different direction at the front office.

But, just what has he been doing lately?

Who has Mack coached? I think all his experience is at the GM level. He hasn't been in the CFL since the 80's same as Kelly, that's my only worry.

But you are definitely right he can't be as big an ass as Kelly was. I don't think many can!

Lets just give him a few years, things wont be easy for him in the first couple. It is not like he will be our coach. He will run the club, provided Asper doesnt trick us into giving him our team for a song and a dance, and build us a winner.

Rebuilding the Cleveland Browns I believe quite well by the look of it .

My mistake. I meant to say managing not coaching. Mea culpa...

Anyhoo...maybe Joe Mack can now tell us where the idea that we must sell the Bombers comes from eh? Wink heh heh

I dont think selling the bombers is a good idea. I always thought Asper's stadium deal was bad news, and still do. I liked other proposals in which the team remained community owned. Asper can go and help his sister with her bloated BS Museum
