Actually...why not just have a random draw?

Each team gets to pick 5 players (1 line) from their current lineup.

All other players go into a "hat" based on position (all forwards in one, defense in another, goalies in another)

Then the teams draw players and they get whatever comes out.

Salaries fixed based upon position and years of playing and paid by the league, not the team.

Teams have to pay the league a certain amount every year to cover the players' salaries, etc.

Every year, each team gets to pick 5 again from their existing roster.

(or, if someone wants that "player/mentor/hero" feeling...the draw could be every 3 years)

.

Perhaps they realize an NHL team will not fly in Winnipeg. But they are not saying anything because they to not want to alienate their Moose fans who are wanna-bee NHL fans.

I believe they aren't saying anything because there is nothing to say. The Phoenix situation needs to be resolved before they can make an offer. No other team is currently for sale.

The Chipman's and Thompson have said almost nothing simply because they have been judiciously discreet since day one. They are the Balsillie antithesis.

And given how matters are progressing with the teams currently on the bubble, maybe marking their time. The price is surely going to go down.

JTF's comment about a sewer system is understated.
This Province has a great need for a sewer system, as I have been advertising for an experienced drapery sewer for months and there aren't any available. Just clothing sewers, and they have to be trained.

No surprise here if true

Coyotes Hit Another Bump In Phoenix

Sportsnet Radio FAN 590's Bob McCown has learned from sources that the $100M public bond issue which was a requirement to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix has failed. The future of the Coyotes in Phoenix is now in question and once again the possibility of the club returning to Canada has resurfaced.

The NHL is (surprise) denying those claims.

They'll keep denying it even as moving trucks eventually move the team out of the city

okay.. I finally decided I cared enough to read up on this.

So the Glendale peeps HONESTLY think that somehow they will make north of $6million per year from parking for 5500 spots...when parking is FREE right now and people barely attend the games?

40 gamesish per year right? so 5500 spots X 40 games = 220000 "rents" paid

6,000,000 / 220000 = 27 dollars per game in parking?!?!?!?!??!?!!??!?!?!

just wow... I dont think even the blue bomber board is balsey enough to try and lie like that.

not that it adds up to $6M...but...you're leaving out other ventures such as:

concerts, exhibitions, business bookings, etc.

Plus, are they anywhere near any business parks? or a good location for a commuter bus stop?

Becoming a "daily/monthly" lot would generate quite a bit of income.

Those peeps over at Glendale council are up against it eh?

This is a team that has performed very well last year and this year-to-date and yet they have difficulty attracting peeps to the games.

It has been speculated that much of the crowd is formed by peeps buying game packages for almost nothing (4 tix, 4 hot-dogs, 4 pop). Now parking becomes a consideration. Will they have to raise the price of those specials to include parking) and will that have a dampening effect on the buyers of those packages? Or will parking be free, thereby taking that revenue away from the city.

Why Bettman is hanging on so desperately is beyond me.

Glendale arena is right next to a major shopping centre (much like the old Winnipeg Arena was right next to Polo Park).

Care to speculate what Polo Park did on game days?

No I am not. That is what is quoted in the freepress article.. Why would I add my own speculation to it?

Seems absurd of an idea to even attempt to add PAID parking to all those events when it is currently free.

I can't understand how a city with a population of 250,000 is going to pay $100 million for a hockey team that nobody cares about and hasn't turned a profit in 14 years.

ARTICLE AS WRITTEN:
The City of Glendale will hold a special meeting today to vote on the future of the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena.

Glendale city manager Ed Beasley is asking for direction to move forward and finalize the lease agreement that would allow Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer to buy the Coyotes from the NHL.Glendale has pledged $100 million towards the $170 million purchase price and has issued $116 million in bonds to raise the cash.

Beasley will provide an update on the bond issue and what it will cost the city in interest and principal payments going forward. The city will retain 5,500 parking stalls for its $100 million and plans to recoup its investment by charging for parking at Coyotes games.

The bond has not yet been put on the market but received a lukewarm review from Moodys Financial Services last week.

It's expected Glendale will need to meet interest payments north of $6 million per year on the bond issue. Parking is currently free at Coyotes games.

The public meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Winnipeg time.

The live video stream will be embedded in the related story

Hmmm...nope...still not in there!!!

ok...again...it wasn't THEIR math, it was yours

because
1) it doesn't say they are going to recoup the money after only one year
2) what are the odds of all 5500 spots being filled for every game?

i agree with you that it's a dumb idea...and a big waste of money...just questioning the math is all...how you arrived at $27 to park.

Hey, can't we all get along?

AA, the math presented deals with the $6 million annual interest on the capital. If one does the math on just those 5500 spots during forty games the math is quite correct!

To recoup the $100 million after one year the hockey fans would have to pay $455 per parking spot per game.

To cover just the $6 million interest after one year the hockey fans would have to pay $27 per parking spot per game.

Ahh...that does clear it up a little bit.

I didn't question the $6M...that was listed in the article...I guess I misread that the $6M was an interest thing...though that seems awfully high for a loan of that size (I know the article quoted it)

But, like I said...it's still a dumb idea.

One of our guys here is watching the "live meeting" on the Freep site...he keeps commenting about the discussions, and apparently how Lieberman is a moron.

The $6 million is the speculated cost for the $100 million bond issue. It has been reported that the bond issue has not been (or will not be) warmly received by the marketplace and will cost that much to see it fully subscribed.
