waiting if they were busy does not bother me as much as knowing that they are either not busy.. or so damn well organized that no one ever has to wait in the waiting room which is as likely as my cat speaking english

Our system runs on a who is in serious condition gets into see someone right away! This 5 month appointment tells us that we simply do not have enough specialists to handle the day to day demand.
If Manitoba Health had the money they would arrange for Grand Forks, Minneapolis etc Doctors to see our ailing kids, adults and 65 year olds.
That said, you have to get after the specialists secretary with phone calls regarding cancellations! Or get into the emergency ward. My mother did that awhile ago regarding her eye problem, after she was given a 5 month appointment. She took her knitting with and ended up seeing the Doctor that she had an appointment with in 5 months.
I told you before that it took 2 days for me to get an MRI by phoning in the morning at 8:30 before they called out to their cancellation list.
Goth_Chic, you mentioned your baby has had this problem from years ago? Check the warranty ! lol

Okay so today I managed to email my MP that Judy whatshernameagain, I emailed my MLA and Theresa Oswald our Minister of Health. I am hoping something can be done. I am looking into getting a referral to see a specialist in Vancouver, we can stay with my cousin and hopefully get to see someone sooner then November.

Goth_Chic, please phone out-of- province referrals to get the way things work. It took awhile for my MRI to get approved, because the procedure was not available. What the rule is regarding too long wait times , you have to find out what the procedure is!
It probably has to come from the specialist that cannot see you!If you cannot find the phone number for out of province referrals call me tomorrow morning at 489 XXXX, as I have my file at work. I am in by 7:30 AM , Phil

Our system is broken and has been for a long time.

We simply have to get rid of the people in charge first, before we can fix it. However, we seem to be relying on these same idiots to fix what they've fcuked up. That's just stupid imo.

The problem is in the admin of the system and unless we take back control of the over bearing administration which are mostly relatives of some goverment person . the whole system is doomed to hiding under paperwork . That is what we get for allowing the NDP to run Health Care

GC.. Our letter of reference was last September. Sept 9, 2009 to be exact. My wife called in April 2010 and they were pissed off at her for calling. She called again last week, was told we MIGHT get called/sent a letter to tell us when the appointment is sometime in August or September. AND it will be a 6 to 8 week wait after we get the letter/phone call.

Yeah thats right. OVER ONE YEAR WAIT. Awesome, kid is going to be freakin blind by that time. So chances are you MIGHT get in umm...next February?

Start asking for the name of the people you are dealing with and document everything: date, times, etc.

If not satisfied with attitude or tone of person you are speaking with immediately ask to speak with her supervisor. Keep document the names, dates, times and attitude/tone of everyone you speak with as you climb the chain of command.

NOTHING I hate more than when some pompous ass of a bureaucrat gives me attitude.

Which is bullshit of course. Because having sat there before I know full well there are lots of open spots so the fact that someone might cancel or not show up? I doubt they even care to call anyone on the cancellation list. Why bother?

Goth- phone the specialist, every friggin morning as soom as they start doing business. If you get a feeling that they are ignoring you, get a gun and I will visit them in the sfternoon!
Ask for an out of province referral, because 6 months is not an acceptable time frame and tells you they cannot handle the business.
Good luck!
I am waiting 7 weeks since I came back from the USA for my standing MRI, which was approved , after I went to the Manitoba Health Appeal Board after I was refused a standing MRI, because the procedure was
1)an experimental / emerging procedure (10 years old)
2)the place was not a reciprical billing hospital
3)The costs were facility fees

So much bullcrap, all because we don't have enough Dr's to do the work!

There is actually a website with information on wait times, though I don't find it informative:
http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/waittime/faq.html

Interesting that they mention that funding has no impact, as Manitoba has the highest paid doctors in the country (almost in the world) so these high wages severely restrict the numbers of physicians that can actually be hired with limited funds.

Ask the doctor if he'll do it for a little cash under the table.

Recently, a friend was asked if he wished to get in the following week for some eye surgery at $2,000 or wait for 6 months. He told the doctor to screw himself.

This is all public record. In Canada the docs are either paid a wage or they have a business and bill the Province for services. The wages are negotiated by colleges of physicians. In Manitoba, all physicians are listed in an annual report with how much they made in the year, and around 500K gross is no exception (they may have huge expenses though, and I'm not just thinking Ferrari). The minium wage for physicians in Manitoba starts at about 221K/year. In other jurisdictions like Health Canada, WHO, European countries you can look at many job ads and very rarely see wages that top out even close to 200K/ year. For example at Health Canada, which is approximately the Canadian average, the max. is about 140K! So a move to Manitoba can easily mean a doubling of income for a Canadian doc. Because we don't have a higher health budget than other places, this also means we can only afford about half the number of docs.

The TOP earning doctors in WRHA earn that much, but the average do not.
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/er-doctors-top-earners-wrha-report-shows-97460379.html

That's mainly ER doctors (which is a high need in Manitoba right now and so commands a higher salary), doesn't even seem to feature other specialties such as neurosurgery that are highly paying, and definitely doesn't include the average family MD.

Here is info on the pay of an average family MD in Canada ($93,000- 144,000 average):
http://www.payscale.com/research/CA/Job=Family_Physician_%2F_Doctor/Salary

and broken down by province we are pretty much middle of the pack:
http://www.payscale.com/research/CA/Job=Family_Physician_%2f_Doctor/Salary/by_State

By major cities in Canada, Edmonton pays way more than Winnipeg does.

This is a Canadian article with an interesting chart regarding the salaries of physician specialties and includes their overhead costs (which many people don't consider when moaning about how much those doctors make).... http://www.milliondollarjourney.com/doctor-salaries-not-as-high-as-you-think.htm
