Okay, so what should the new team be named if not the "Jets"?

hmm actually not too bad.

This is a Winnipeg team, and I think too many people hate the flooding in manitoba - so how about

Winnipeg Flood.

Someone please gather the ideas from this thread for a poll, results to be forwarded to chipmunk. "Jets" is just so 70s or even 60s - beyond retro, the kids won't get it.

I'm actually rather fond of The Flood as a name. Falcons as a second choice.

I'd like to see something pithy like The Riel Deal, but that isn't going to manifest.

How 'bout simply "The Jets"? (no Winnipeg...no Manitoba.)

Eliminating Winnipeg from the name could draw more people from the province. Saskatchewan football team had a province wide ad campaign that worked extrememly well for support across their province.
Do you think anyone from Brandon would take offence at the "Winnipeg" part of the name?

Some "Manitobans" have said they are not put off that the team does not include "Manitoba" in the name. I suspect some are. F-that. This is a Winnipeg team, supported mostly by Winnipeggers.

Name them the Winnipeg Jets!

Seems like Thomson agrees
Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION

'Jets is a fine name,' Winnipeg franchise's co-owner says

Thomson dreamed of playing in the NHL

MAKE that one vote -- one very big vote -- in the "Winnipeg Jets" corner.

David Thomson, Canada's richest man and newly minted co-owner of the new NHL franchise in town, weighed in on the moniker debate Tuesday.

"I think the Jets is a fine name," Thomson said. "(The team's name) is something we will have to think hard about. And swiftly."

If they wanted to name it "Jets" they would have announced it already, given the popularity of the name it sure would help with ticket sales. I find Jets is so 60s or even 70s, and if it was called "Manitoba Jets" all I would visualize is a bunch of drunk indians standing at a bush. I don't think this would be the image we want.

evil troll, the Chipman's long ago decided against the Jets. I think the reason for the delay in the name is that with all the outpouring of emotion for the Jets since the Shoalts article 13 days ago, they're reconsidering it.

And for a fact, the NHL owns the Jets trademark, and yesterday Bettman was quoted as saying if we want it back we can have it. I can find the quote if I have to, but I'm lazy. Wink

It's not owned by Shenkarow. It's not being kept from us.

They'd be fools for not giving the name Winnipeg Jets some serious consideration. And these peeps are not fools.

It WILL be Winnipeg Jets.

The only thing I see bad about the Jets name, is that it was created back when building planes was the single biggest employer in Winnipeg.
Also the reason the Bombers got their name.

That industry has all but evacuated Winnipeg now...so perhaps something more "current" would be appropriate?

I'd also look at focusing on the Province...except that all the other Canadian teams are based on a City...so having a City name would make much more sense:

So I've thought of a few names (or seen them somewhere)

Winnipeg Rails
Winnipeg Flood
Winnipeg Rivers
Winnipeg Catfish
Winnipeg Walleyes
Winnipeg Waves

Heh heh your Americanness is showing through...

Ben Haskin (the original owner of the WHA team) named the team after his favourite NFL team, the New York Jets.

The Blue Bombers were originally named after the Bronx Bomber. Surprisingly nothing to do with planes or wars or anything along those lines... http://www.bluebombers.com/page/history

The Winnipeg Jets were a WCHL (now WHL) junior team prior to the existence of the WHA and Ben Haskins involvement.

The WHA team took the name and logo (since it was already popular in Winnipeg) and the junior team then used the Winnipeg Clubs and Winnipeg Monarchs names.

Who owned the Junior Jets?

Gary Lawless wrote: Benny Hatskin picked the name Jets because he liked the NFL football team of the same name. He went with a personal whim. It was his team and he named it.

The name was simply carried forward from the Western Canada Hockey League's Winnipeg Jets, a junior team, and also owned by Jets founder Ben Hatskin. Hatskin had been an admirer of the New York Jets, so he decided to use their moniker for his hockey teams. http://www.curtiswalker.com/jets/faq.aspx

Brown Bomber, right. Like my link said.

Really?
Cause everything I've been told/read since moving here is that the names came because of some big airplane manufacturer (can't remember if it was boeing or lockheed or bombardier) that initiated the names for the teams.

But...obviously I was misinformed.

Either way...the rest of my statement (City Teams) would still stand...and making things a bit more current wouldn't hurt.
