Mounties hook ice-fishers for open beer

What the heck? Ice fishing without beer? What??? I didn't think that was possible!

The police seemed to enjoy it too:
"It's not often you get a free day to just go out and ride on the river
with a snow machine and go out and do some proactive patrols," he said.
"There's lots of other pressures in communities we deal with every day,
and it's nice to get out and do that kind of thing."

Once again, common sense plays no part in law enforcement ...

heard this one on the radio yesterday.

what a crock.

and i thought the camera-lights were bad!!!

The cop on the radio says "it's not the drinking and fishing that's the problem, it's that most these people leave the shack and drive home via vehicle or snow machine"

So wait for them at their vehicles you idiot!!!

They are using a little used (and little known) bylaw about liquor in public places. And technically, despite the privacy IN the shack...they are on public waters...so "technically" they can enforce it. But it's NOTHING but a cash grab...and hopefully when those tickets start hitting the courts...the judge was one of the guys out there and throws them all out!!!

I dont understand how having alcohol inside a closed ice shack (that for the record is not actually moving) is considered illegal and cause for a charge of open liquor.
I barely even understand how having open liqour in a vehicle is cause for a charge of open liquor.

note they have alcohol and wait for them to get on their vehicle and nail them big time then.

We need to relax some of our liqour laws in this country ( never mind just this province). What exactly would be wrong with walking down the street with a beer in your hand? What exactly is wrong with being drunk in public?

I agree with you Dean....fishing is not fun done sober.....hahahahahah.....maybe if folks put beds in the ice shacks then drinking in them would be okay? hell, we could run the brothel right on the river Dean.....hahahaha

actually....what's MOST likely to happen, is some group or business will petition to get a section of the river "privatized" and then "rent" spots on it for the shacks to go where they can "legally" have the liquor.

Either way...it's a cash grab!!!

Sad to say most of these fools just over do it and also have too many fish in their possesion. Having a few is not so much the problem , if you have a dd in the shack

wow, really people??

200 ice shacks, 5 tickets total for open liquor (3 from the rcmp, 2 from natural resources) and this is a cash grab?

wait to catch them on their vehicles, seriously? because there is enough cops to block all the snowmobile trails on and off the river?

for one, i'd be happy if this small patrol prevented anyone from driving home impaired, or makes people think a little harder before doing it in the near future. i hope that no one can argue against having less impaired drivers on our roads, there are far too many deaths caused by that to take any chances with it.

second, you really think out of 200 shacks checked out that only 5 had open liquor? (assuming those are 5 different shacks, they might have all been given out to 5 people in one shack)
like pav says its targetted at the people being stupid and overdoing it, in my experience and most people i know have never been bothered as long as they were behaving and not drinking and driving.

i'm not sure how this was considered newsworthy.

How did having a beverage in your ice fishing shack turned into mayhem on the highway? If I'm sitting here having a beer, am I some manical drunk who is going to mow down innocents on the road tonight?

If there's a law about drinking in your ice fishing shack, take it at that, no need to embelish the situation. Jeez.

is that what you interpret as 'mayhem on the highway'?

nowhere did i say that everyone who drinks while fishing is a drunk driver, in fact i would argue the opposite, only 5 tickets out of 200 shacks indicates to me that most people were behaving themselves and drinking responsibly.

What if you didn't fish, but just sat in the shack with the guys killing a few ale? Gets you out of the house at least?

The part I don't get (if it's about safety) is that they weren't driving and may not have planned to drive. They could enter any bar in town under the same premise. Or they could really deal with this ice/drinking problem and raid every curling club in the province on Sunday. An easy million dollars in safety fines there.

Adam X you said:

Nope just check for all the "floating cases of brew" on the lake this spring because that's were all the evidence went when the boys in blue with not much else to do came by...GGF

Why is it when the rules are enforced the guilty always have ten things the cops should be doing .

http://www.cjob.com/News/Local/Story.aspx?ID=1199518

Reading that story, about 100 charges were laid it appears.

after 200 ice fishing shacks on the Red River near Selkirk were checked

Gibbs says about half of the shacks checked revealed people non-compliant with rules and regulations.

the original article that was linked to listed the tickets that were given out. there were 5 tickets given for open liquor. the rest were given out for breaking fishing rules like barbed hooks, too many lines, etc. which is what natural resources do.

original article in free press http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/mounties-hook-ice-fishers-for-open-beer-85182767.html?viewAllComments=y

"Last weekend, officers travelled from Sugar Island to Lockport
visiting ice shacks where they could see smoke snaking out or people
outside. The Mounties gave out three tickets for open liquor.

Natural Resources officers gave out two more tickets for open
liquor, five for barbed hooks, one for failing to carry a fishing
licence and one for too many lines."
