By JIM BENDER, Winnipeg SunCathy Overton-Clapham was still in a state of shock 24 hours after her teammates told her she was no longer wanted as third for Canada’s reigning women’s curling champion Jennifer Jones.

“I was totally blindsided, for sure, and obviously very disappointed,” Overton-Clapham, 40, told the Sun on Thursday. “They just said things were getting stale and they needed more excitement and vision.”

Overton-Clapham was the all-star third at the 2010 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and among the top thirds at the women’s world championship, where Jones settled for a disappointing bronze medal.

“One of the hardest things about this is that I earned the right to compete at the (2011) Scotties (as defending champ), the Canada Cup and the Continental Cup, and that’s been taken away,” she said, her voice emotional.

Jones, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn Askin told Overton-Clapham of their decision together on Wednesday and made the announcement in a press release late Thursday night.

I met Cathy Overton-Clapham when my company sponsored her team a few years ago. She was a class act and a true professional. This is a shabby move on jones part. I suspect it will bite her on the a$$.

"....but it is believed the team is looking for a younger player." Well, I do believe we have the primary reason, telegenics. The Q factor. Curling goes Covergirl. Sheesh.

I know that the "image" of women's curling has certainly increased the number of guys watching it these days.

I think they should force the women's curlers to wear the same outfits they force the women's beach volley ball teams to wear.

I agree. To a degree. Some curlers should not be seen in such outfits.

Jones & co. are fools to let go a world champion curler (Cathy O did it with the Ice Queen before Jones came along) so I agree it will come back to bite Jones big time. She will either put together her own team, be picked up by another or step into a coaching role. Either of the three will make me watch women's curling again just to see Jones fall flat on her proverbial...

When you look at the bios for the tam, the 5th, Jennifer Clark-Rouire, seems to fit in the mould of "beauty before curling" concept that Jones is going after. Sad state of affairs when it comes to this, if that is the underlying reason behind this move.

Jones may have to do something about her appearance if that is their motivation. She has those matching black eyes and a permanent dour look on her face. Askin and Officer work.

From left to right:
- Jennifer Jones, skip
- Cathy Overton Clapham, third
- Jill Officer, second
- Dawn Askin, first

Yesterday, the Freep made that point. In men's curling, you can change team members and there's no big outcry.

I'm not familiar with how any other significant team handled sacking the best third in the business. I'm only familiar with what has been reported in this one case.

Cathy O did not see this coming. I think a team of this caliber would handle this in a much different manner. Perhaps the team could meet together. Discuss the issues. Discuss possible solutions.

To be summarily dismissed without so much as a how-do-you-do is callous.

Did I say she was the best third in the business?

Not true. Did you glean that from The Black Rod?

Wasn't there a bit of a row when Gushue sacked some of his team a few years back ( Jamie Korob?)

Ferby and Nedohin have parted ways, but I don't think it was a unilateral decision.

No, Winnipeg Free Press, sport. In case you missed it:

For Jones, the firing was just business by Randy Turner.

Excerpt. "OK, curling fans, let's not beat around the bush here: In dumping
longtime third Cathy Overton-Clapham, Jennifer Jones is going to be the
villain. Full stop.

It doesn't matter if Jones' teammates, second Jill Officer and lead
Dawn Askin, were fully on board with the decision. It doesn't matter
that men's teams such as Jeff Stoughton and Kerry Burtnyk hire and fire
players on a regular basis."

"Then there's the double standard built into the game's DNA. Most changes
on men's teams are met with a shrug. It's just business."

There are 2 types of sports.
Type 1- No personal time given up except for the activity itself.
Example: 4 people go for a game of golf. Only compensation is a beer complements of the high scoring player.
Type 2-All sorts of personal time given up due to player meetings, training, travel, promotions, and actually playing the sport. And there is serious compensation involved including sponsorships for serious high-performing players. Example: CFL football.
Players in this category are protected by contracts.

From my point of view the curlers who are chasing the Olympic or World Championship dreams belong more to the type 2 sport. They should have contracts to protect their actual or potential winnings.
