Canada's population has surpassed the 34-million mark.

Statistics Canada estimates the population was 34,019,000 on April 1. That's an increase of 88,100, or 0.26 per cent, from January 1st.

The agency says all four western provinces had growth rates stronger than the national average.

Manitoba's population grew by about a third of a percent to 1,232,700, its fastest first-quarter growth rate since 1972.

StatsCan reports more than two-thirds of the increase was due to net international migration, while 29 per cent was attributable to natural increase.
Some will dismiss this as meaningless. I say it's a good indicator of positive change.

If we do the math that is about 14,000 new Manitobans, annually. That's almost one sell-out at the next Jets game!

My understanding is that the goal is 20K of immigrants per year, and eventually more. Are there enough jobs for all these new arrivals? I welcome all the new arrivals, as long as the vast majority are working, and not sitting on welfare. We already have enough "locals" eating up enough of our taxes dollars doing this already!!!

Who knows? But the more the merrier!

Unemployment rate is pretty low. Good people are getting harder to find. If you have a trade you will have no problem finding a job.

More worrisome probably is lack of rental housing. The vacancy rate is 1%~. If we lose the rents controls it'll still take one to two years to put a significant dent in the demand.

These are all good things though.

One really positive thing about more immigrants is that they add so much ethnic flavor to the province, especially Winnipeg. There seems to be so much focus on one particular culture, over and over and over again. It get tiresome, boring and bland. More ethnic cultures lead to more variety in food, shopping, entertainment, festivals, etc. The more ethnicity you have, the less focus on one particular culture being favored over others in various aspects of society (thankfully!), and that is a very good thing!!!

Of course you were referring to Ukrainians. I blame Deank for that. He doesn't seem to know when to leave well enough alone.

We only have ourselves to blame for letting these people sit at home collecting welfare without having to do a thing for it besides vote.
Every couple of months I see an article in the media about Canada needing more trained trades people. And for some dumb reason Canadian companies have to IMPORT these people.
Instead we should be making these welfare collectors get off their butts, get some training, and get to work.
Its time Canadians started voting for people who will get CANADA working.
