Went to make a deposit this morning at my credit union. Seems they cut off your old card without so much as a how do you do when they send you a new card.

I would think they could program the ATM with a full screen message that say's:

"Get thy new card set up you lazy jerk because this is the LAST time you can use this card".

Or something like that.

yeah...RBC does it too.
It's so someone can't get your "old" card and use it.

Mine doesn't have the chip installed yet though. Maybe in my next card it will be.

GOM

call your BANK NOW!!

someone may have in fact received your new card and is using it.

Most banks ( all of them I think ) will actually send you the new card and tell you in the letter that comes with it that you have 30 days to use it. On first use the old one becomes inactive. If after 30 days use the old one AND the new one are inactive and you must go into the bank.

ALSO of note. two weeks ago I had some crazy weird problems with my bank card (with chip) Tried using it at A&W and it came back.. unauthorized use see bank. So I called the bank and they said... no.. everything looks fine. So I went and tried to use a non bank ATM ( closest one) and it said. Bank card has been deactivated. WTF? So I called the bank and they said.. come in as soon as you can.

So I go to my bank and it works fine.. turns out there was just a communications problem on the network that day

But regardless.. if you have not already.. call your bank RIGHT NOW... you may be being ripped off as I type.

I have both my new card and the separate letter with the new PIN in my sweaty hands. The letter says nothing about thirty days though.

But I'm on my way to take care of it now so thanks for the warning anywho.

I've had the chip for a few months now and have had problems with it twice now. The chip just randomly broke and guess what? When the swipy thing gets old it breaks slowly and you have a chance to go into the bank and get a new card. When the chip breaks, it just breaks. That's it. You're fuckered if the bank isn't open.

Fixed the problem. The gal in the credit union was seriously uber-cute/sexy so I could not complain about being forced to return to the ATM to complete my business.

I just remembered why ATMs are evil...

I've had a chip on my shoulders for a few years now and have had problems with it more than twice now.

I'm still trying to figure out what the advantage is to having a VISA/Mastercard chip card in regards to making internet purchases. It's still the same as it used to be. How is said chip protecting you during that kind of transaction?

Ah man, I thought this thread would be about a marketing campaign by a bank teaming up with Old Dutch or something! ;-)

I think its Visa that has a feature where you set up a secret password that you use for online transactions. This goes beyond the extra 3 digits printed on the back of the card.

Also, I think the chip'd cards are supposed to have a protective sleeve - not sure if with the sleeve the card still fits in a wallet? I have enough stuff in my wallet that the chip'd card seems to be well protected, but I could see how a loose card or a card in a lighter wallet would be susceptible to damage from frequent flexing.

Makes no difference in that regard....just basically prevents honest people from accessing money when they needit :p

It's not that scary if your ordering from known safe vendors, I'm not worried more about the security of my info with Amazon or Apple than I am when I use my card at Shell or Sobeys etc. I know a lot more people that have had trouble with their cards being compromised from using them at Wal-mart than I do from people using them online shopping. Your info can be compromised at anytime (remember Target having their credit card records stolen?). I wouldn't worry about it too much, just don't give out your info to Russian porn sites and you'll probably be fine.

Personally I love the chip card, prevents me from having to use a store pen that never works to have to sign a stupid little piece of paper. What kind of security is that? No one ever looks at the signature. The signatures on my card never look like my signature anyways cause they're so small and smudged etc. At least with the chip card the pin has to match or the transaction fails, and the unencrypted magnetic swipe isn't used and therefore can't be copied.

heh.. I thought all the "movies" "leaked" to the internet were done by the "production company" (ie the male stars who are really just using it as an excuse to bang hot chicks)

Chip cards are of Satan, and I long for the days of yore when all was simple and easier to rip off. Since obtaining a chip card from BMO about 2 years ago, I have been plagued with problems, ranging from incompatibility of the BMO card with the vendor's machine (i.e.- Panago Pizza's TD machines won't read the chip card) to machines not being upgraded enough to accept the chip technology.

I wonder how long before BMO calls me up and asks me for my finger print/take a barcode. /conspiracy
