Lamoureux victorious

Beats NDPer in close Winnipeg North race

By PAUL TURENNE, Winnipeg Sun

Liberal MLA Kevin Lamoureux came out on top after receiving more than 7,200 votes in Monday’s federal byelection in Winnipeg North, defeating his closest rival, the NDP’s Kevin Chief, who finished second with more than 6,300 votes.

After two decades at the Manitoba legislature, Kevin Lamoureux is headed to Ottawa.

The longtime Liberal MLA will soon take a seat in the House of Commons after receiving 7,303 votes and coming out on top in Monday’s federal byelection in Winnipeg North, defeating his closest rival, the NDP’s Kevin Chief, who finished a close second with 6,508 votes.

The vote counts for the two candidates were extremely close for much of the night before Lamoureux pulled ahead.

“There’s always a sense of nerves going into it and you never know what’s going to happen. I’m just very fortunate and very thankful,” Lamoureux said. “At the end of the day I had faith in my volunteers. These are the same people who got me to the Manitoba legislature, and I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Just 15,780 out of 51,198 registered voters in the riding, or 30.8%, cast their ballots.

Chief — a first-time political candidate — congratulated Lamoureux “on a great battle.”

“We worked very hard,” he said. “I’ve got to thank all of you. I think it was a very, very inspiring campaign.”

The NDP’s Judy Wasylycia-Leis had represented the riding for 13 years, but stepped down earlier this year to enter Winnipeg’s mayoral race, a contest she ultimately lost.

The man who now replaces her is a longtime MLA who has represented the north Winnipeg riding of Inkster at the Manitoba legislature for all but four years since 1988 — he lost in 1999 and was re-elected in 2003.

Lamoureux beat out Winnipeg city councillor and fellow Grit Mike Pagtakhan for the Liberal party’s byelection nomination last summer.

Lamoureux was unsuccessful in his one previous crack at federal politics, losing to the NDP’s Pat Martin in Winnipeg Centre 10 years ago.

His win doubles the number of Liberal MPs in Manitoba, as he joins Anita Neville, the Grit MP for Winnipeg South Centre.

Tory Julie Javier, the Green Party’s John Harvie, the Communist Party’s Frank Komarniski, Eric Truijen of the Christian Heritage Party and Jeff Coleman of the Pirate Party were also running in the byelection in Winnipeg North. Javier finished third with 1,645 votes.

In the other Manitoba byelection, Bob Sopuck easily retained Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette for the Tories. Conservative Julian Fantino unseated the Liberals in the Vaughan, Ont., byelection Monday night.

Looks like judy and her ndp cronies pooped the bed big time. No mayoral win and lost a long-held ndp federal seat. This result screams loud and clear that Winnipeggers are sick and tired of the lame old ndp.

As much as I can cheer for a Liberal been elected, this is good news. This is coming from a guy who has been represented federally by the socialist bastards his entire life.

Kevin is a good guy, for a Liberal, but as GOM said, I take this as an indicator that we have long grown weary of the state that the NDP has put our province in.

Vaughan, Ontario has elected a PC after many years of Liberal domination. Perhaps there is hope for the east.

While sitting at home this morning, collecting her two publicly funded pensions, I would like to ask Judy Whatshername, "So, how did that work out for you?"

I don't know how anyone can make this claim. hughie has not been the premier of this province yet.

Like the BS ads the NDP are running: we shouldn't be making things up for political expediency...

Glad that Lameroux won, however. I give a huge chunk of that credit to the snow storm. The NDP traditionally have a huge chunk of soft votes and with the storm in the evening yesterday quite a few of those votes simply did not vote. IF a federal election is called in the spring and IF cheif runs again. I am not certain what the result would be...might go back to NDP.

Snow Storm!! You call that a storm??
Or are you saying that the NDP are just fair weather supporters?

Pretty much any parties soft vote is. ie... they vote one way, but are not overly motivated to actually go out and vote and something like that snow storm would have stopped them.

2 very strong candidates, but lameroux has been working hard for 18 years in the area, and the citizens knew what he has done for them!
Good to see the political system working with 7 candidates.
30% turn out reflects how very important the people view their politicians!

Chief will have a very promising career with the provincial NDP. I can see him being the leader of the NDP provincially one day.

Well, isn't that something to look forward to?

But I still want to know about the snow storm that I missed yesterday. What time did it happen? Maybe I fell asleep for 20 minutes or was in the bathroom, but I don't recall a snowstorm?

Ohhh, I walked to the poll, so I didn't notice it that bad, ... but perhaps I come from the heartier part of the constituency.
