well its finally happened again. an emergency vehicle was involved in an accident.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Ambulance-carrying-patient-involved-in-three-vehicle-crash-111975219.html

its really does not surprise me. I have noticed more and more and more people being complete idiots as to what to do when an emergency vehicle is anywhere near them.

Hell just today on the way to work there was an accident at Pembina and Taylor I wondered why there was no emergency vehicles there. I am southbound on a bus.. we go under the jubilee underpass that sitting right there is the reason. The firetruck and police car ( 4 blocks behind fire truck) are held up in traffic. Nobody moving or anything. no attempt to get out of the way.

Hell the Fire truck was right behind this one vehicle laying on his horn real loud... several times and all the driver in front of him would have had to do was edge over another two feet.. but he wouldn't and the morons in the far right lanes would not either. they just sat there. waiting for traffic to move.

MPI needs to put out one of those driver lesson videos... but shot during rush hour.

I think some people panic when they are confronted with such situations. Some extra education spots would be useful.

and...unless the emergency vehicle is right behind you, you aren't SUPPOSED to move.

You're supposed to stay still and let the vehicles that NEED to move do so.

Now the idiot the firetruck was honking at SHOULD have moved...and yes, if the only thing you can do is to go through a red light to get out of the way, you ARE allowed to do so.

No one knows that you have to move to the right and stop!

I firmly believe that vehicular traffic in the way should be simply pushed out of the way!

AGEsAces and his all caps review...

I was taught to move to the right and hug the curb. Maybe the rules have changed since the 1870's when I took driver ED...

"I firmly believe that vehicular traffic in the way should be simply pushed out of the way!"

LOL

thats funny. On Tuesday we were headed from my work to Kildonan Mall
(why cause I am cheap and the Santa pics there are free),.. and I like that mall better..

but anyway. We were headed north on Lagimodiere and there was a cop coming south the one son asked. Can the cops just push people out of the way if they wont move?

IF you're moving...you are to move right and stop.

IF you're stopped already, you are to not move at all unless the emergency vehicle is coming up behind you, and then you are to move forward till safe to move to the right and stop.

I actually think the same...firetrucks should have "cowcatchers" on them so they can just push vehicles out of the way that won't move, or are parked illegally where they are trying to get to.

BTW...PoloPark Santa is much better than Kildonan...still free...

in this case.. had the guy right beside him moved over 4 feet ( which room he had ) then the guy in front of the emergency vehicle hopefully would have moved as well.

Well...like I said...the guy should've moved forward and right out of the way of the FT.

yeah it basically gets down to the fact that people at the start of the pact have no idea that they are supposed to go through the red light.

They weren't collecting any money to see Santa when I was there.

They charge you if you want them to take the photo of your kid with Santa.
But you can take your own photo if you want with your own camera.

it's not the kids...it's the photographer.

if you only had 1 kid, the photo would be tighter (more of a head shot)

Emergency vehicles and the idiots who freeze and don't know what to do when emergency vehicles come along are one of my wife's biggest pet peeves.

There needs to be more edumukation for your average dullard driving around out there...that goes for those who don't speak english or french as well..just because you don't speak the language, doesn't mean your not subject to the same rules and code of conduct as anyone else on the road. Ignorance of the rules is not a defense. Ignorance of the language isn't either.

Same goes for timidity...not an excuse.

Mayhaps we could also get the Police Cadets to follow emergency vehicles every now and again and hand out fines/tickets to those who don't get the hell outta the way. Or regular cops for that matter. There needs to be a penalty, there could be lives at stake and we got folks camping out with emergency vehicles screaming behind them.

IMO this issue isn't getting better, it's getting worse.

put cameras on the front of the fire engines and police vehicles

Any time that the sirens are activated it kicks in and starts recording with a mandatory review afterwards with tickets handed out.

people caught under this get a choice... mandatory 4 hour driver education class or the fine..for the first offence only.
but of course then we would have the problem identifying the driver, but I suspect the registered owner would cough up the driver real quick

how aboot chasing the buggers down with the Heli-Chopter flying around....surely he could make a traffic stop or parachute a cadet into issue the fine/ticket. lol

Seriously tho, "people caught under this get a choice... mandatory 4 hour driver education class or the fine..for the first offence only." I like this idea!

Imo, in general, Winnipeg drivers are clueless when it comes to everything but going slow.

They don't know what to do when it comes to Merge signs, Yield signs, uncontrolled intersections, passing with parked cars on the street....this is just another on the list.

Perhaps the problem is with driver-licensing??? Who gives a license to some dumb fu uck that just stops when they don't know what to do....just stops.

[aarrgghh]

One less emergency vehicle, one less siren = one quieter city.

Sounds like a plan.
