My friend works for the government, she received an automated call last night that they voted against the deal that their union negotiated for them and it's back to starting over again.
Civil Service Tentative Agreement Not Ratified

January 21, 2011
Today, the Civil Service ballots were counted and the tentative agreement was not ratified.
The Civil Service bargaining committee will be contacting the Employer as soon as possible to request that the parties return to the bargaining table.

Didn't they offer a wage-freeze for 2 years with a 2% increase after that? (pretty close to that)

With the way Selinger has been throwing money around (to the Askers) who could blame them for wanting a better deal?

Plus, with an election next October, why would they?

I believe that was the offer, plus no layoffs or Filmon Fridays.
My friend does not like being in the union, she was applaed at what her union leaders have for benfits which is far greater than she would achieve.
As far as she is concerned, far to much waste in middle managers that don't do anything.

Wow, a 2% wage increase over 3 years AND you get to keep your job? What idiot would turn that down? I mean that would cover almost the first years inflation and you'd only be losing ground for 2 out of 3 years. Awesome deal, what fools.

Selinger has money for a stadium that most feel is not needed.

He continues to support a museum with our scarse resources.

He thinks nothing of spending an extra half billion dollars on a Bipole lll route that is ill-advised.

The MGEU needs much better negotiators imo.

any time any union willingly presents a deal to the membership that they recommend and then that deal gets voted down it should be an automatic dismissal of those involved in the negotiation process.

Maybe in this case the union knows the market cannot sustain the usual demands. Maybe the union believes a 2% increase and keeping your job is actually a good result.

Funny how a union demanding a 10% annual increase and a say in how to run a company is a wise union and one accepting these terms is worthy only of sarcasm?

"The market" (in this case the government) can easily afford to spend oodles of moola on stupid and wasteful things, so that must not be the reason.

That would be sufficient reason to dismiss these negotiators and replace them with more competent and stronger ones.

I agree with this. From what I understand it's a new head at the union and the benefits they receive already did not sit well with those they represent.
