Hint: Think getting more Canadians trained and employed instead of importing them

Totally agree. Just look at Canada's aboriginal unemployment rate. Sky high unemployment. However, Canadians are too pampered and there are just some jobs we won't do. I'm not just talking about low skill labour jobs.

Canadians don't want blue collar jobs. Despite great wages our yoot today want $50,000 office with a view white collar jobs right out of university.

Until such time as we can convince multi-generational Canadians to do that work we have no choice but to allow immigrants into the country that are willing to do that work.

It's not altogether a bad thing though as Canada has a low unemployment rate and we'd need to increase immigration anyway.

1. I would like to know how they actually calculate the unemployment rate.
For example how are employed-below-education level or unemployed-because-they-were-too-lazy-to-go-to-school or unemployed-because-they-were-too-busy-getting-into trouble or the unemployed-because-they-think-blue-collar-is-beneath-them are all counted in the employment rate.

2. Maybe its time to tie welfare support directly to how-hard-the person-is-trying-to-get-off-welfare.

Does anyone have any other things we can tie welfare support to?

There has been much discussion here in the sandbox about how the unemployment rate is calculated. It is convoluted to be sure.

How about this idea as a direct fix to the one aspect of calculating true unemployment so this looping debate can become focussed on what may be the real employment situation.

Start running welfare the same way EI operates. That means you have 6 months to find a job - the the benefits are no more. People should have to demonstrate that they are looking for a job - that is as simple as it gets. The days when welfare is a lifestyle option should be ended. As the working class get's squeezed and squeezed some more to fund an increasing "social" costs - they won't continue to accept that others simply feed off of their efforts/labour.

As far as the real employment/job needs go - the government should be limited to steering those unemployed into the right employment/training direction.

For those unwilling to integrate into the work-force - they will collect their welfare at the end of a two-wek work period of fulfilling the needs of the municipality that feeds them - such as the street-work, parks and other clean-up/maintanance work. That segment can diminish the cost-burden that society pays via taxation to pay unionized civic employees to do. And if they don't perform - they have nowhere else to turn except food-banks - which should also have accountability measures built in. Call the period ahead the great reconciliation of the free ride. he working class will eventually demand it so they might as well act now.
