Thanks
Carpet is all gone now.
No drafts around any baseboard on the main floor.
No drafts I can feel upstairs. Just cold walls.
Just cold in general.

Possibly. From what I have been told, it would be a vent, high up.
All my vents are on the bottom of the wall.
All blow heat ... well ... almost blow heat.

And no idea what it would cost to get one installed either.

oh HEY!
I noticed at Canadian Tire last week that they have this little fan that you put inside your heater duct right underneath the heater plate thingy. It is tempature controlled and basically sucks the air up from the vent and forces more hot air (one would assume) to enter the room that it is in.

Might work as a temporary fix to no cold air return????

all my cold air return vents are on the floor. As were ever single one built for almost all time... Its only recently that they started putting cold air returns near the top of the wall.

get one installed after the house is built? oo ee man thats going to be expensive most likely...

So I received my first gas bill while running that super high efficiency furnace and the gas bill is $116 and hydro is $78. so running this unit very hard as my girlfriend needs to stay about 24 degrees celuis to not die of hypothermia! It seems to have only added about an addtional $25-$30 amonth to the bills. Alot better then I was expecting!!

I have 3 vents on the second floor.

1 in the bathroom.
1 in each bedroom.

Unless one of them is dual purpose, then no cold air return.
Is there such a thing as dual purpose?

one would have to be the cold return on its own if there is a cold return. To me, it sounds like there is no cold air returm.

The cold air return may not be in the rooms though. It could be in the attic.

actually...i'm not sure.
for my house (which is 100 years old) the cold air return is strictly a vent fed off the furnace and under our kitchen (which used to be a "summer kitchen" and has been closed in now).

It may be possible, no actual vents were run in the walls.

There are no vents in the attic.
All vents upstairs are for heat.

I do have a cold air vent on the main floor though. If that makes a difference?

cant hurt to try that little extra fan vent thingy...
Saw one @ HD this weekend for $40 and seriously considered it.

the cold air vent IS on an inside wall right?
if so you can actually entend the cold air return upstairs fairly easily

Yes, if I travel straight up, it would be in the attic.

Yes, if I travel straight up, it would be in the attic.

or in one of the walls in the bedrooms?

ie cut a cold air return hole.... and make sure there is free air flow from the one in the main floor straight up
But you might want to do a test and see if your cold air return works in teh main floor even first.

ie.. put a piece of paper over it when the fan kicks in.. does the paper stay stuck from suction?

I will test the vent tonight.

Since it would come into the attic, I could easily cut it into one of the room. That seems like a pretty good idea.

Only issue is with getting it up there.
Means cutting a big chunk of wall out to do it. And I have shitty plaster walls. Seems more like a pro thing, than an "I can do anything cuz I'm superhandyman with a HD card", type of thing.

But to do that, I would need to be sure that would help a lot with the heat upstairs.

the best thing to do, is to make sure your vents are not leaking somewhere already.

do the suction thing for the intake.

cover all but 1 of your vents and see if the pressure changes at the 1 left open.

look for signs heat/air is getting out of system somewhere else (ie. cracks, breaks) and tape them with foil tape.

if you do have to tear into the wall...remember to remove from stud-to-stud...not just cutting wide enough to squeeze a vent pipe in. It will be much easier to tie in drywall if you can hit the studs...and the tape lines will be easier to hide.

before putting tape/plaster on the existing plaster...get a belt sander or rotary sander and take off about 1/8" of an inch about the width of the tape. then put the tape on. It will make a much smoother line and blend in easier.

you can get some fairly large and quite decorative cold air return vent covers so how crappy you cut the whole should not be much of an issue.
but if you do need it to look pretty... listen to ages Smile
