An event that would have seen Winnipeg host thousands of athletes from around the world and reap millions in economic spinoffs has been cancelled.

The Winnipeg Sun has learned that the first-ever World Indigenous Nations Games, which were set to take place in Winnipeg in August 2012, were cancelled several weeks ago.

The games, which were awarded to Winnipeg in 2008, would have brought more than 3,000 participants from across the globe to Manitoba and generated an estimated $50 million in economic activity, according to a speech Manitoba Sport Minister Eric Robinson gave at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York last year.

“We’re disappointed it had to come to this,” he said Thursday. “Aboriginal people generally are the ones who will lose. The opportunity to meet other aboriginal young people from around the world is priceless.”

Wayne Lord, acting president of the WIN Games, said the wheels fell off last fall when the federal government declined to match a $3.5 million commitment from the Manitoba government.

“We weren’t able to accomplish it,” he said. “We got really, really close. We got within a signature of pulling this off.”

Lord said organizers will now “regroup and rethink the way forward” because they’d still like to stage the games, although he said the earliest that could happen is 2014.

He said the games, which would have featured modern and traditional sports along with a heavy cultural component, could be held in conjunction with the Olympics or the North American Indigenous Games, which were held in Winnipeg in 2002 and founded by the same person as WIN, Wilton Littlechild.

But Lord said the lack of federal support means Canada might not be the place to host the first games.

“If you can’t get a government to move, after a while you stop walking into the wall,” he said. “Maybe we’re barking up the wrong maple tree.”

Coun. Dan Vandal, who supported the bid from the city’s end, said he’s disappointed.

“We’re the aboriginal capital of Canada and it would have meant tons of inspiration, hope and role models for young people.”

Yup. The government failed Canada's indians once again. The $10 billion we spend today is never enough.

Oh, would this event bring $50 million in economic activity to Winnipeg? Yeah, I didn't thinks so either.

unbelievable.

See the thing is, when planning events of this nature. YOU GET THE COMMITMENT TO FUNDS FIRST then make your bid to host them and so on. Almost seems like perhaps the Feds saw this for what it really was.-

No, it would have been a HUGE waste of our money. The question is what is Deank thinking?

"...it was really..." a boondoggle?

appears to me to simply be a political organization using sport as a method for its message.

I could be wrong, but "3.5 million" seems like such a pittance you really have to wonder why the feds would say no.

Sounds like a racist version of the Olympics to me.

Glad to hear that they didn't get a government handout.
