In my opinion, half way through, duceppe has looked like a bumbling fool. Perhaps a language thing. Somehow I doubt it.

ignatieff is uber-focused on his very specific sound-bites and won't be moved off them It is very clear what his strategy is.

Layton looks good although, like duceppe, a vote for layton is a wasted vote.

Harper has defended himself quite ably in a three-against-one attack.

wrong- you cannot judge independently!
They are all damn good.
Duceppe looks like a red neck over French multi culturism.
I loved Iggy saying to Harper -this is not bickering, this is a debate! lol

Three against one? Layton seems to be after Ignatieff quite a bit.

Its the only voting demographic that is likely to change their mind and vote for NDP.

Now that it is over I am more convinced than ever that the only parties that should be eligible to run for parliament are national parties. duceppe and the bloc are a complete joke. Too bad harper/ignatieff don't have the nads to go after that twit and his position.

count iggy did his share of bumbling as well. God help us if that man and his party become the new ruling party. Loved his angry snip at layton about the ndp never getting in power... Quite the quick temper on that dude.

harper, in my biased view, did very very well. He did not bite at the bating. He stood firm in his resolve. It is clear the conservatives have decided to run strongly on their policies.

I imagine there will be a poll somewhere and expect harper to come out on top.

Nah... more like...

1. Quebec sovereignty! I want to hear YOU say it!
2. You side with them! They should vote for us!
3. You cause SIDS!
4. This is our plan for the future! We didn't do what they said we did.

Iggy was not focused imo.

He fumbled four times that I recall. For a supposed Harvard Debater, he sucked big-time imo.

He needed to score a TD strike and threw gutter balls.

Layton was his usual fool and the French Seperatist was...who cares!

That's my analysis anyway.

All debaters were very good, in my opinion! NDP and Liberals very good in their criticism and pretty funny in their zingers! layton mentioning Canada doesn't need more prisons , when we have the Senate, and Iggy teling Harper it isn't bickering , it is debate.
Harper handled all his responses with a consistent , very credible defence!
Remember there were 3 against one!
I am not sure who I am voting for, either the NDP or Liberal! I like the idea that the Liberals in Charleswood are running someone with the last name of Clement!
I will have to mail back my Conservative membership card.
3 emails to Fletcher going back over the last 3 weeks and no answer to any. That really bothers me!

Asked who won the debate, 37% of those surveyed by Leger Marketing said Harper was the victor. About 21% said Ignatieff won.

Global also reported on pre- and post debate surveys. I can't find it on the interweb. However, it showed Harper coming out well ahead. It also showed Layton did extremely well. count iggy came out the same.

Most of what I've read suggests that Harper won the debate by being above the nonsense and bickering.

Layton came in second with a resounding trouncing of the Count.

The count bombed. (even if the Liberal spin doctors don't believe it.)

The French Separatist wasn't on form last night either and fumbled muchly imo.

By BRIAN LILLEY PARLIAMENTARY BUREAU

OTTAWA — If you are going to paraphrase a mass-murdering leader of Communist China during a political debate, you might want to make sure you aren’t in the middle of praising human rights and democracy.

“Let some flowers bloom here,” Ignatieff said as he chastised Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s record on promoting democracy as part of Canada’s foreign policy.

The line is similar to one used by Mao Zedong, the leader of China from the revolution in 1949 until 1976. In the summer of 1957, Mao launched a slogan of reform, often translated into English as “Let a thousand flowers bloom.”

Mao’s slogan has been cited as a tool he used to draw out dissidents opposed to Communist rule in China so he could then punish them. After dissent against Mao’s policies became strong, he ordered an end to criticism and repressed the views of dissidents, intellectuals and students whom he viewed as too right wing.

Ignatieff used the paraphrase to support his argument that the Harper government repressed groups it doesn’t like by removing their funding.

According to the Black Book of Communism, which documents the brutal repression and slaughter of millions at the hands of communist regimes around the world, there were 65 million deaths under Mao’s communist regime.

Ignatieff’s Mao reference was quickly noticed on social media.

Matthew Reid, a Toronto musician, quickly asked on Twitter, “Did Iggy just quote Chairman Mao?!”

Others followed, including Jeremy Schultz who thought Ignatieff had lifted the quote from the Green Party leader. “Iggy stole “let the flowers bloom” from May,” Schultz tweeted. “Nope,” came the reply from Vicky Smallman, “From Mao.”

Mao used the slogan to draw dissidents and then would punish them.

Could the NDP end up as the official opposition to a conservative majority?

Stranger things have happened.

I think it would send a clear message to the Liberals that they really need to smarten up their choices for leader. 3 successive utter failures that are almost universally hated by the Canadian public. You would think they would have learned from the first two.

BUt but but!!!! it sounds good!!.. and unless you know where it came from its sounds like an insult...if you are already a supporter of his.

As someone who is not an Ardent supporter of any leader I saw it as a pauper begging for something.

AS TO what it seems he probably meant.. insinuating that democracy has suffered under Harper, it seems Iggie is the one forgetting that he was APPOINTED into his position, it seems Iggie is the one forgetting that it was 2 months after an election that he tried to force a take over of government.

(on that note I would not have minded at all if every single one of the MPs who tried forcing that quit their current parties and all joined a new one, I strongly suspect however the people that voted for them would not have liked that much)

This is what I'm gunning for. I live blogged the English debate and part of the French debate at politicsrespun.org, and if nothing else, I'd LOVE to see the Lib/NDP fence sitters wipe out the Libs (as was done to the PC's after Kim Who). Ignatieff and his cronies don't deserve to be opposition.

Shut your fool mouth, and refrain from uttering that name again. GACK! *spits over shoulder*

Eradicate the Liberals. It's the right thing to do. Our children depend on NOT having Justine as a leader.
