Seems totally fair in my books. You give me this. I give you that in exchange. Think selinger and his maroons will go there?

Me neither.

Provincial government will be a player in bid to bring NHL back to Winnipeg

CJOB News Team reporting

5/18/2011

The provincial government will be a player in the bid to bring NHL hockey back to Winnipeg.
Premier Greg Selinger has always said the province is willing to
assist to help support the long-term viability of NHL hockey in
Manitoba.
Sources tell CJOB funding for enhancements to MTS Centre is an option
as is debt support to ensure the facility is financially viable.
It does not mean expanding the arena. It means adding amenities to make sure it is NHL-ready.
It does not include safeguarding against any losses.

Ya - right. This is just sickening to have a government whose only intent it is to make the rich richer and stick it to the middle class.

Heh, it's mostly the middle class that will enjoy this ndp largess.

And if you think the ndp's mandate it is to make the rich richer you really haven't been paying attention.

I'd be cool with paying for an upgrade of sorts. But that is it... no debt support bullshit.

Premier: Manitoba taxpayers won't subsidize NHL team
WINNIPEG— The Canadian Press
Published Wednesday, May. 18, 2011 3:31PM EDT
Last updated Wednesday, May. 18, 2011 3:38PM EDT
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says taxpayers won't subsidize an NHL team in Winnipeg.

Selinger says the province has no interest in supporting the operations of a professional hockey team.

He says the province also doesn't have anything to do with the negotiations between True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd. and the Atlanta Thrashers.

But Selinger says the province will do what it can to help make the city a desirable place to relocate the Thrashers.

He says the province could help with any renovations that might need to be done to the MTS Centre to support a team.

Previous reports have indicated True North is negotiating with the Thrashers' ownership group to purchase the team and move it to Winnipeg.

I think the province is going to be bending over backwards to help the SHED district get started as well.

Starting to look like 1993 / 1994 all over again. Sad
And some Winnipeggers had the nerve to poke fun at Phoenix for paying the $25 million to cover the losses. I wonder who is laughing now.

IF the Jets return you watch the PRIVATE coin POUR into that area. There will be greater police presence. They will clean up more frequently. Hotels will be built. More restaurants. Hopefully more housing. And better yet perhaps some of these new facilities are built on top of an existing surface parking lot.

Now because CentreVenture money is available private investors will ask for their share. Whatever. Just make sure the people run out of the area congregate in Osborne Village area. Smile

Have ya considered waiting to hear what is actually involved?

BTW NO one laughed at Phoenix at all. Most of us snicker continuously at Glendale though. And for good reason. That city is run by complete imbeciles.

If Winnipeg or Manitoba posts $200 million up front and $25 million annually then feel free to take the holier than tour 'tude... Until then, suggest we wait to hear how much money is involved.

Getting to sound like the Canadian MTS Museum of Hockey Rights...
Especially the annual fee for costs...
I wonder if the main exhibit will be the NHL? Or WWE midget wrestling...
Funny how everyone (big businesses) always start a fuss, showing off great interests for something, and then, at the final moments of a deal, sneaking off in search of real money, not their own...

An agreement to sell the National Hockey League’s Atlanta Thrashers to a Winnipeg group which plans to relocate the franchise to the Manitoba capital is done.

Sources confirmed tonight that preparations are being made for an announcement Tuesday, confirming the sale and transfer of the Thrashers to True North Sports and Entertainment, which owns and operates the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League and the MTS Centre arena, which would become the NHL team’s new home.

Gary Bettman, the commissioner of the National Hockey League, is expected to travel to Winnipeg to make the news official.

TSNs Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie both dismissed this Globe and mail story.

It's probably as close as it's ever been since the team left Winnipeg.

On one hand we have respected journalist at the Globe and Mail saying the deal is done and respected journalists at TSN saying no it is not done.

The tie-breaker for me is the fact the Globe and Mail is owned by David Thompson. The soon to be owner of the new Winnipeg NHL team...
