It seems like that may have been too late.
I wonder when those taps would have been opened up in Al Warkenton was still the chief flood forecaster.

Just flew over Lake Manitoba this morning. You can't even recognize the southern edge of the lake from the air.

It appears the province flood officials have finally seen the light.

I'm starting to think that this "one in 300 years" flood thing was nothing more than bullshit to deflect from the governments incompetence in their handling of this matter.

It appears that much of what they've been saying is nonsense. (no surprises there eh.)

I think they may have concentrated their efforts on the wrong areas.

IE: If they were going to push more water up the Portage Diversion than the diversion was built to carry:

1. They should have spent more time up front re-in-forcing the Portage Diversion dikes.
2. They did not need to cut the dike at the hoop & Holler location.
3. They should have sent the sand bags up the Lake Manitoba area instead of making the Oakville, Elie, etc. communities and farms sand-bag for nothing.

The question remains: will the bureaucrats remember this and prepare differently next time? I mean, you'd think Manitoba would be very good at this by now...

It seems flood info was not passed down from the old administration I reckon.

Everything in this flood seems wacked....the flow rates, all the estimates given, and the timing of crests, etc.

Better to over-estimate than under-estimate, I think! Good to see the army out doing good things!
Do you remember a few years ago , the Toronto mayor called for the army's help with a snow storm?

It's unfortunate the provincial workers did not overestimate the help the people living along lake Manitoba would need considering all that water that was going up there. Embarassed

Did people from Winnipeg really giggle when that happened?

Lake manitoba is now predicted to crest ONE FOOT higher then expected.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Lake-Manitoba-will-crest-higher-later-province-123257798.html

HOLY CRAP!!!

The amount that lake holds one foot is an insanely HUGE amount of water to be off by. Like ridiculously huge amount
