This is why I'm so gratefull for COLA, and for those peeps before my time.

Imagine that. Nothing went down. Is it possible these people were very selective in their choices? How many of those increases were unduly influenced by the price of oil? Are the huge oil increases out of the ordinary? Does COLA cover those extraordinary increases?

I've never been a union member so I've never "enjoyed" prescribed COLA. I have however received annual pay increases from my employers, presumably because I contribute in a meaningful way to the success of my employer. There were times when I was unhappy with my pay raise. There were times when I was astounded at my pay raise.

If I did not feel I was appreciated by my employer, as partially evidenced by pay increases, I would have looked for another job where the pay was better. I never did.

Anywho, credit where credit is due. The unions in the early 1900's did the world a service.

Heh....and we've all been paying for it since.

Unions were required when the government was made up of the country's elite who were not very interested in the regular guy.

Now we have an entirely different set of circumstances and people in government.

But the biggest factor is that there are now plenty of laws to protect the worker.

The unions are now just an added cost of working without providing very real protection from the big bad company.
