After the 2004-2005 lockout, the NHL salary cap was $39 million.
For the 2011-2012 season the cap is expected to be $64 million.
(The floor is expected to be $48 million ).
This means each NHL team must spend between $48 - $64 million on players salaries for the next NHL season.

I wonder if some owners are wondering if the lockout was worthwhile.

It's surprising that it jumped so much this year...

I'm sure the lower end teams that enjoy the revenue sharing agreement aren't complaining too much about this. Razz

They have bigger issues to deal with, such as attendance.

Actuall JT E, the lower spending teams would be concerned as the low end went up as well...

Yes GOM, your correct, the minimum salary level rises and lowers (ha! never happened yet) with the ceiling.

My point was that most teams that spend the minimum (Phoenix, formerly-Atlanta, Florida etc.) are usually doing so because of unstable attendance and/or ownership issues (usually due to crappy attendence) and those teams usually qualify for revenue sharing (so long as they meet the standards, which is usually a minimum attendance level, which explains why those teams fudge the numbers, so they qualify)

Couple the revenue sharing with the new TeeVee contract, and I'll argue that those smaller market teams are getting a ton more support than the previous CBA.

Just my $0.02 Wink

I thought the reason the floor was in the player contract was to ensure each team spent "at least" the floor on player salaries. IE: at least try to be competitive.

I don't understand why there is a floor to begin with?

If I can put together a winning team for less money...who cares how much money I pay my players?

how so?
if the players think they are THAT good that they should earn more...they would go play for a different team.

but if I, as an owner, can put together a team of dedicated players, and give them a reasonable salary to go out and do a good job...and that salary is less than some fictional "floor"...then so be it.

understand though, I think a team that wants to compete and win games would be hard pressed to hire players to get the job done and keep the salaries below that "floor"...but it should not be something forced upon an owner to spend.

That's like saying "I want to build this building over here...and I want to spend at LEAST $10M...even though all the material & labour can be found for only $5M." --- hey, it actually sounds a LOT like government spending Wink.

The floor is to avoid the tightwad teams from skimping too much.

Yes, but there are other leagues. The KHL for example has outbid the NHL for some Russian players. And at the lower end of the pay scale some European teams can compete.

Well no. My point was merely that there is a viable, well paying alternative. That alternative is a bargaining chip. If you don't like the offer an NHL throws at you you can decline it and sign for similar money elsewhere. There are still several NHL calibre players playing in Europe, especially the KHL, that could be excellent players in the NHL.

But its not really an option

Its like me telling my boss.. no.. that 2.5% raise you gave me is not enough I am going to go work in Australia, where I know I can get 59% more.

But I would not work in Australia.. its too damn hot. and the poisonous stuff that freaks me out...and I would be pretty far away from my family.
