Thanks for the list, as someone who rarely carries cash it helps me prepare for those few places that are still stuck in the past.

Be sure to request a receipt as to not support tax evasion. From the list I only have been to Wagon Wheel a few times and I think it's worth the xtra trip to the ATM.

I was at a very crappy Chinese buffet today and evn though they offer debit on their windows. When I went to pay they said sorry debit no work. Credit work though. The only thing hat saved them giving me a free meal was a friend I was with.... So IF they don't advertise that debit is not available would you just walk out? I know I almost did

There are a lot of people who are able to write off the cost of meals. Those people need a receipt, but a receipt can be a chit( a piece of paper with the information needed for the claim)

You're definitely on to something here. Smile

You can negotiate some decent rates for debit terminals nowadays so they can't use the fees as a great excuse anymore. Today you end up losing customers by just not having debit/credit as an option to pay.

I'm usually leery of places that are cash only and "forget" to give out receipts.

I see you got Bridge on the top of the list. I was there and was cursing and sputtering when I got to the counter and it was cash only. I had to drive o'er to Osborne and get money at the gas station. Boo urns!

Sourpuss- how can you drive around with no money on you? I would like to know the mindset! What happens if you are in an emergency situation?

And I don't mean waiting in line for an ice cream?

Most emergencies are covered by credit/debit as well, the need for cash is declining every day. On the very rare occasion that something is cash only and you are unprepared there is usually an ATM somewhere within a block or 2 at most if you're still within city limits. Travelling outside the city (and always in the US) is about the only time I make sure to have a backup supply of cash. Seems Americans are incredibly slow to adopt debit cards at point of sale and if the Visa machine is down your pooched untill you find an ATM.

Cash is declining as a payment form for many reasons. It easier and safer NOT to carry large sums of cash, no worries on whether or not your bills will be accepted (for instance if you have $50's and $100's good luck actually using them to pay), and you get rewards for using your credit card etc. I'd rather use the payment form that I'm insured against loss from and that actually rewards me.

I would say that amongst most peers my age that cash is used is maybe 10% of the time. For me it's even less now that Timmie's smartened up and started accepting other forms of payment. For the longest time they were the only reason I kept any cash on me at all.

There was a letter to the editor in the free press, yesterday I think, where the gentleman complained about people holding up the check out line to use their credit card or debit card. Older people who cannot remember their pin #.

He was forming a group to follow these people outside and kill them! lol

That's because they're the only ones who don't bother resetting their PIN's so they're all the same. I'd be holding up the line too if I had to remember multiple PIN's. I definitely think that demographics play a big part, younger people tend to be much more comfortable going cashless while many seniors still have trouble despite the fact that debit cards have only been around for 20 years or so?

It's funny cause if you look at my youngest child for instance, she is confused when I tell her I don't have any money for stuff like those coin operated games, gumball machines etc. She just looks up at me and tells me to use my card lol. Kids these days are used to seeing debit cards as the primary form of payment and cash itself is kind of foreign. Just wait till NFC cell phone payments become the norm, even debit and credit card usage will fall by the wayside.

That old fart who was ahead of me in the fast checkout used his debit card for a $2.00 charge!

I can't fathom what kind of emergency situation would require a cash only transaction. I usually have enough spare change to plug a meter or make a phone call (good luck finding a pay phone anyway) but other than that, I haven't had to bribe any officials lately. When emergencies have happened ie.) car goes kaput I have no way of knowing how much the charges are until the car is actually towed, so what good would $40 in my pocket be? Besides, when my wallet gets lost stolen, they get a bunch of worthless plastic that can be zapped in a second with a phone, not a stack of bills that I can never recover. When I buy things on my Amex, I get double the manufacturer's warranty, replacement insurance AND a history of the transaction beyond the receipt from the register.

Gotta say Sourpuss sums up my feelings nicely. All well said, the only single advantage cash offers is the ability to pay even if all electronic systems are down. Other than that there is no practical reason to carry cash 95% of the time. Even most parking meters take credit cards now, much easier than keeping a bunch of loose change in the car (attracting crackheads) just in case you may need it.

You will change your tune come December next year... Mind you anyone smart enough will even abandon money then and simply trade in food, tobacco, alcohol, drugs and pictures of Meg Ryan naked
