Jack Layton died this morning.

NDP Leader Jack Layton died early Monday morning after a struggle with cancer. He was 61 years old. The news comes mere weeks after Layton announced he had been diagnosed with a second form of cancer.

Very sad. He sure went quickly. Perhaps a blessing in disguise.

RIP Jack.

It would pose the question though...

how much of the upcoming election will be swayed with sympathy votes?

Not much I'd say. Jack was Federal and there did not seem to be much of a connection between the provincial party and the federal party.

RIP Jack. My sympathies to his family and close friends.

Even though I didn't agree with him politically, he seemed like a good guy. Very sad.

I wonder if the potent cocktail of vitamins, drugs and such he was on to help fight through the pain during the election made his cancer accelerate that much more?

Huge loss for his party as there is no one else that has his charisma.

Unless....maybe doer comes out of retirement Smile

That is not as outlandish as it might seem Deank. That twit Nycole Turmel will very quickly destroy Jack Layton's legacy. If the ndp hope to salvage what Layton built they need to lose this person.

Doer carried the ndp in Manitoba well beyond its' best before date...

I don't think I stated my comment correctly...

I think the NDP candidates in the upcoming election are going to spew "Jack Layton...blah blah blah" in all of their commercial propaganda.

Thus trying to play on the "heartstrings" of the already bleeding-heart NDPers...plus the sympathies of those who are not yet decided etc.

If even ONE candidate brings up Layton in their advertising, debates, or public addresses, other than to answer a specific question about Layton...then they are using his death for that sympathy vote.

And hopefully Manitoban's will be smarter than that. If the ndp tries that I'm sure it'll backfire.

Well yeah,

Only problem is. NDP got tons of SOFT votes. Not Hard core NDP votes.

They were votes AGAINST the Liberals and some against the Conservatives and those votes fell to the NDP simply because of Jack himself.

Not his ideas,
Not his party platform

But the fact that he knew how to handle himself. He came out of the televised debates like a freakin King and people saw that and said well.. I am not voting conservative because of policies. I am not voting Liberal because of their Leadership, but I still want to vote and Layton seems like a nice guys, whats the worst that can happen.

So when ANYONE tries to say, we will carry on fighting for JACK!!!

Most people wont care, those that will care would have voted for the NDP anyway.

I never trusted Jack Layton. He was always smiling and always had a damn too good answer for any questions that were thrown his way! he worked tirelessly for the down trodden , the poor, the unemployed, those without proper housing and no water.

He was a newcomer to federal politics (2003) when he started his federal carreer.

Most unbelievable comment from my wife this morning-"Harper has come up in my opinion"

Harper has offered Elizabeth Chow a state funeral- generally reserved for Prime Ministers and Governor Generals!

Good for Harper, and a bloody shame that Jack didn't get to spend the next 4 years in opposition! What a shame! 61 years old is a bloody shame!

Pretty sure that leaders of the official opposition get the state funeral too.

As an FYI... I think I am probably the first one in the country to mention it yesterday.. and yet.. somehow some moron still took that as an opportunity to try and shoot me down.

No. Leader of the Opposition would not automatically get a state funeral. GG, PM (current, past) and sitting members of Ministry. That said the PM has the right to grant a state funeral to prominent Canadians at his discretion.

Good for Harper. It would have been a dick move not to do it.

All members of the privacy council get one I thought. And the leader of the opposition is a member of that (for life)

Pretty sure about that. Gonna be hard to find that information anywhere though and All the public reports are sayiing other wise but I seem to remember reading something...hmm maybe that was uk parliament rules tho

Leader of the opposition can be appointed to the privy council (by the governor general), but not automatically.

I think the fact that Harper made the offer to Olivia Chow to give Layton a state funeral, that the offer had to be made and wasn't automatic, is probably a good indicator of the rules.

Given how large the privy council is, probably a good thing they don't get an automatic state funeral, we'd be doing it too often...

I heard that this is the first time a Leader of the Opposition was given a State Funeral.

One other time occured when Laurier died as Leader of the Opposition, but he had been the Prime Minister previously.
