I heard that this is the first time a Leader of the Opposition was given a State Funeral.

One other time occured when Laurier died as Leader of the Opposition, but he had been the Prime Minister previously.

Jack sure has left an impression on people. I remember saying if not for his politics he'd make a great PM. Maybe not with those words...

only the NDP could be greedy when someone dies right?

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/ndp-scrambles-to-fix-legal-snafu-with-donations-in-memory-of-layton-128479433.html

"
The late NDP leader had wanted mourners to donate to the fledgling
Broadbent Institute, a left-wing think-tank, rather than send flowers.

Because the institute is not yet a legal entity, the party's website
encouraged people to make donations through the NDP, which would pass on
the money once the institute is established.

The website advised donors they'd be eligible for political tax credits.

However, the Elections Act forbids political parties from soliciting money on behalf of another entity."

There are companies out there soliciting organizations to "advertise" their grief over the loss of someone so prominent that supported their cause.

This is getting stupid already.

This strikes me as being an honest mistake rather than greed. There probably could have been a better way to collect the donations, but hindsight is 20/20. At least they are being honest and open about it and how they are trying to fix it.

Given the outpourings of emotion, I think respecting Jack's last wishes is a really important thing to do. It's not Jack Layton's fault or the party's fault that the broadbent institute isn't yet set up to receive donations legally.

....and you don't think that the party is being opportunistic in soliciting funds (no matter where they are to go) because of his death?

No more than any other organisation that collects donations in memoriam. Cancer research, humane societies, but there are many, many places that do this. It wasn't the NDP that picked the broadbent institute vs another cause that could be supported in tribute. It was layton.
