CALGARY DINOS @ MANITOBA BISONS

Saturday, September 3rd at 1:00 p.m. - University Stadium
TV: Shaw Cable 9 [CanadaWest.tv] // Radio: UMFM 101.5 [On-Line]

So, the season opens for real this weekend. There has not been a lot reported about the Bisons this year. Partly because there is not a lot of optimism. And partly because the CW teams have not been generating a lot of their own stories. In years past GoBisons.ca had training camp stories which would trigger something in the MSM. This year, nothing. It seems that a lot of the staff people (at the U of M and elsewhere) were occupied with the Universiade. Hopefully things will change now. You might want to check the smattering of stories at the CW Football Site.

Anyhow, I hope to be at the game. Since the Bisons did better than expected against Regina, and since Regina is the apparent pre-season favourite (just ahead of Calgary), and since they are at home, I have hopes that the Bisons will put up a good battle.

C.W. SCHEDULE:

September 2nd
Alberta @ Sask. 8:00 CDT : [LIVE STATS]
UBC @ Regina 8:00 CDT : [LIVE VIDEO] : [LIVE STATS]

September 3rd
Calgary @ Manitoba 1:00 CDT : [LIVE AUDIO] : [LIVE STATS]

I watched the 1st half on Shaw cale channel 9, and it was exciting football. The 1 camera that was there covered the game better than TSN covers the CFL.

Who won the game? I haven't been able to find any coverage of the final ?

The Baby Bisons played one heck of a game against the defending conference champs. With such a young team this year they were not given much chance this year. However, this one will have to go down as a blown game. With a 31-17 lead in the 4th quarter they turned the ball over twice. Once QB Khaleal Williams went to the hand the ball off to a RB who had slipped. This gave the Dinos the ball on the 12 yard line, and eventually a TD. Later he dropped a clean snap from centre, giving the ball to the Dinos around the Bison 30 yard line, and eventually another TD. Ugh.

One thing clear from the game is that the Baby Bisons' exhibition battle with Regina was not a one-off. Despite the turnovers, Williams soundly executed an effective game plan. The rookie RBs (Coombs and Demski) were both very good and the receivers were effective both long and short. The D never gave up a TD on a drive longer than about 30 yards.

Next up for the Baby Bisons is a trip to Saudi Alberta to face the Evil Monkeys. IMO nobody can afford to drop points to the Primates this year.

REGINA RAMS 10

|> [C.W. STORIES ON ALL GAMES] : [CIS FRIDAY ROUND-UP]
|> [LEADER-POST STORY] : [U OF R STORY] : [UBC STORY]

This was an upset, accentuated by the fact that Regina QB Mark Mueller separated his shoulder and won't be able to play banjo for the remainder of the season. This could drop the Lambs from pre-season favourites to scrambling for a playoff spot. Now we'll have to evaluate the Tweety-Birds' follow up performances to see if they are a true contender.

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 7
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 38

|> [C.W. STORIES ON ALL GAMES] : [CIS FRIDAY ROUND-UP]

The Banjo-Mutts applied a severe beat-down to the Evil Monkeys to somewhat avenge last year's semi-final upset. After being destroyed by the Dinos in the exhibition game, it looks like it could be a long season in Monkeyland. Sask remains hard to evaluate. They had an unimpressive result against Windsor and next week will face a Mueller-less Lamb squad.

PREVIEW

MANITOBA BISONS @ ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS

Saturday, September 10th at 8:00 p.m. - at Edmonton
TV: [CanadaWest.tv] // Radio: UMFM 101.5 [On-Line]

|> [BISON PREVIEW STORY] : [MONKEYS FOOTBALL SITE] : [C.W. WEEKEND PREVIEW] : [CIS FOOTBALL SITE]

Each side has a pre-season loss and a regular loss so far. However, the Bisons' losses were by 8 and 4 points and Alberta's have been by 35 and 31 points. Alberta won the race of the minnows last year and claimed the 4th and final playoff berth, then knocked Sask out in the semi-finals. So while they have been disappointing so far, they may have a comeback left in them. The Bison preview story has the history of the series between these two teams.

This weekend should also include my debut use of CanadaWest.tv. I hope it works out. Each game will have at least live stats, and many will have audio and/or video as well.

IMO the Baby Bisons have exceeded expectations and look good on O and on D. Fumbleitis afflicted them late in the Dino game, otherwise they'd have a win under their belts. In a story called Bison Anthony Coombs selected Canada West Offence Football Athlete of the Week, GoBisons.ca has these quotes:
The rookie running back/kick returner was the team leading rusher with 62 rushing yards on 15 carries plus added a six yard TD run on the first possession of the game. He added a 90 yard TD reception (tied for the second longest in Bison history) to end the third quarter and notched a game-high 101 reception yards on three catches.
Coombs was one of 23 Bison players (out of 50 players lineup - 46% of full roster) who played for Manitoba for the first time in their career. With the 23 new players for Manitoba starting this season on the roster, 13 of them are 20 years old or younger. As of game one, RB Nic Demski is 17 years old while Coombs and LB Bami Adewale are 18 plus eight other players are just 19.

So with the Bisons this year I believe that there will always be the potential for a great performance and yet always the threat of an unexpected face-plant. Like this:
Thankfully, Bisons are not so easy to tip.

Yes, the Herd trampled the Evil Monkeys. This was a funny game, which I was able to watch on-line. Hollywood sez: try out CanadaWest.tv for on-line viewing. It is a nice feature this year.

The Bisons led 2-1 after the first half. (A safety to a single.) There were loads of turnovers as neither offence could do anything right. The second half was a complete reversal. The Bisons in particular were sharp although when they had the Primates down they had chances to put them out of their misery but never quite had the killer instinct. Khaleal Williams shows flashes of brilliance but at times tries to force passes when he should maybe just sprint out and use his wheels. The three rookie RBs are doing great work. They have plenty of good receivers and the D has done well. After two weeks I am thinking that a playoff run is within the Bisons' grasp.

With the other results, the Bisons are tied for third with UBC at 1-1. The mellon-headed inbreds (Saskatoon version) are in town Saturday for homecoming.

OUT OF TOWN SCOREBOARD:

UBC THUNDERBIRDS 25
CALGARY DINOS 30

|> [C.W. Stories - All Games]: [CIS Friday Round-up]

The Dinos pulled another one out of the fire to stay atop the standings. The two-time defending champs are winning now but I have a hunch they are far from invincible.

REGINA RAMS 10
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 33

|> [C.W. Stories - All Games]: [CIS Friday Round-up]

Regina lost QB Mark Mueller in week #1, dropping them from pre-season favourites to a mid-pack team in the eyes of many. Then against their fierce Banjo-land rivals they lost QB #2 in week #2. Now they are 0-2 and nobody is quite sure how to rate this team. Sask is also hard to rate. They are 2-0, and 3-0 including pre-season. But their wins are over an OUA team, Alberta, and a QB-less Regina.

PREVIEW

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES @ MANITOBA BISONS

Saturday, September 17th at 1:00 p.m. - at University Stadium
TV: [CanadaWest.tv] // Radio: UMFM 101.5 [On-Line]

|> [BISON PREVIEW STORY] : [U OF S PREVIEW STORY] : [C.W. WEEKEND PREVIEW] : [CIS FOOTBALL SITE]

This will be the final homecoming game at the old stadium, so it is something special. It will also tell us quite a bit about the Bisons. They had a great game against Calgary, but lost, then managed a narrow win at Alberta. Sask crushed Alberta and then a QB-less Regina. Those came after a lackluster win in pre-season over Windsor. So the jury is out on whether Sask is a contender or one of the gang.

Get there early for beer, burgers, and smashing a car with a sledge-hammer.

C.W. SCHEDULE:

September 16th
Calgary 51 Regina 1 - I'll be posting about this debacle when the other games have been played.

September 17th
Saskatchewan @ Manitoba 1:00 CDT : [Live Stats] : [UMFM Audio]
Alberta @ UBC 4:00 CDT : [CITR Audio]

It is often written off as a cliche that one should see how a team looks on the field, rather than on paper, before one goes off and makes predictions. So when the pre-season coaches' poll conducted in the CW had the Baby Bisons ranked tied for dead last with the Evil Monkeys, and the Regina Lambs selected for first, one could say the forecast was reasonable. How times have changed!

Though the Mangy Mutts had an early lead, that was somewhat misleading. The Bisons were driving into the stiff wind in the 1st quarter when a fumble was recovered and run the distance for a TD, causing all Saskatchewanites to rejoice. The Bison D stifled Sask's O the entire game. I was not really impressed by Sask's new QB, Jabroni Gilbert-Snoring. There were not a lot of times they got multiple first downs on the same drive.

I also think Sask's coaches were asleep a bit. There was a huge wind. The first play of the 4th quarter was a Bison punt. They had only return man, and he played quite shallow, maybe only 5-10 yards deeper than he was in the 3rd quarter when the Bisons kicked into the wind. So he did screw up the punt, and it gave the Bisons a TD, but some foresight from the bench might have helped.

Anyhow, it was a tremendous afternoon's entertainment. They did not have the "smash-the-car" feature this year (to the chagrin of my son), but they did have a fresh crop of perky young cheerleaders, the Engineers' Marching Band (in 30 year old Jets jerseys!), chanting rez students, fine burgers, cold beverages, and a respectable crowd of 3,500.

|> [C.W. Stories - All Games]: [CIS Friday Round-up] : [CIS Boxscore]
|> [U of R Preview] : [U of R Story] : [Leader-Post Story] : [U of C Story]

Pity Frank's Little Lambs. At least I understand they never lost another QB in this one. The Regina fans cheered when they got their single on a 56 yarder. Hgr. And to think, everybody wanted this one on the TV schedule back in August.

UBC THUNDERBIRDS 40

|> [C.W. Stories - All Games]: [CIS Saturday Round-up] : [CIS Boxscore]

The Evil Monkeys rallied to make the scoreline respectable. They were dominated. I don't expect they'll win a road game this year. It is not often that Monkeys disappoint people, but this year they do.

PREVIEW - FAREWELL TO UNIVERSITY STADIUM

REGINA RAMS @ MANITOBA BISONS

Saturday, October 29th at 1:00 p.m. - University Stadium
TV: Shaw Cable 9 // Radio: UMFM 101.5 [On-Line]

|> [Bison Football Site] : [Free Press Story] : [Regina Leader-Post Story]
|> [Bisons' Game Preview] : [Rams' Game Preview] : [Boxscore News Story]
|> [C.W. Weekend Preview] : [Farewell to University Stadium Story]

Today's game against the Regina Rams is your last chance to see a game at University Stadium. And it is basically a quarter-final playoff game. What more do you need?

My son's hockey game starts at 1:15 so I will likely be confined to seeing the 2nd half. I will also PVR the Shaw broadcast.

The Baby Bisons have been a pleasant surprise. They are 3-4 and were within a touchdown in all losses until last week against unbeaten Calgary. Even then they were within a touchdown called back by a flag from another photo finish.

The Baby Bisons have been led by their three rookie running backs. IMO they will lead the Bisons to a Vanier Cup by 2013. (Unless that Mayan calendar thing eradicates us all before then. That would truly mess up football schedules.)

C.W. SCHEDULE:

October 29th
Regina at Manitoba 1:00 CDT : [Live Audio] : [Live Stats]
Sask. at Alberta 2:00 CDT : [Live Video] : [Live Stats]
Calgary at UBC 3:00 CDT : [Live Audio] : [Live Stats]
