In my opinion the PC Party of Manitoba has played this election far to close to the centre and even left of centre - and it will cost them. I talk to many conservatives who have been waiting patiently these past three weeks for the party to start speaking to the issues that they've distinquished themselves from the NDP on - such as aggressive justice/sentencing issues in provincial control, cuts to bloated bureacracy and spending in general. They're playing it safe (and matching the NDP game of buying voters with expensive pledges) while banking on the assumption that the Conservative vote has nowhere else to go - so it's a no-lose strategy. I'm disappointed however several PC tall foreheads have determined this strategy to be the winning formula. Thoughts?

I said that last election and feel the same way this election. The people running this election for McFadyen don't seem to get it. I don't understand their strategy and I am afraid they will lose yet another opportunity to defeat the ndp.

disatisfied conservative voters should vote green for the fiscal aspect

but yes i believe exactly what GOM said is true once again. they are running the elction like they alrkeady won and they just have to not screw up and its theirs. and they are very wrong about that.

I'd like to follow your advice Dean however my fear is any votes lost to the PCs will be votes won for the ndp. This looks very much like damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Were you running in my riding Dean I would vote for you...

The strategy seems to be to stay in the middle to gain as many middle of the road suipporters as possible.

Soon we'll see if the plan pays off.

The way I figure it, the plan is to hope that their core support will remain (like GOM and others) while other voters will join the bandwagon to rid our province of the NDP.

Hope it works. (If not it's bye-bye Hughie eh.)

Yes that's clearly the strategy. The more I ponder it - the more sense it makes. The reality in Manitoba is that the PC's have to shift the NDP vote. Probably the toughest political challenge (that feat) possible. I have though, talked to a two people who bleed Orange - say they were voting for Hugh - because "it's time for change". That's the crowd they're playing to. I just wish they'd speak to their true supporters however this other segment takes priority at this time. Then look for real conservatism. Just like we'll see in Ottawa now.

If it's bye-bye Hughie, I think it will be hello Heather Stefanson.

If, as they say, this province usually goes in cycles with political parties in power, Hughie seems to be hoping this will help.

It seems he doesn't want to do anything that would cause any controversy to piss anybody off at this point, especially those Nippers that will vote Conservative (the ones that voted for Doer and not the party he headed)....hence the toned-down nature of the campaign.

....or maybe it's just a badly run campaign. I suspect the former.

It's pretty sad if people just vote PC because of a dislike for NDP, and not because they find they have a fundamentally better or even different platforms or candidates. If Liberals had a budget for ads and better candidates they'd be a good choice and true alternative.

The guy down the street with the personalized license plate reading "Nipper1" has a conservative sign on his lawn. Shocked the hell out of me. It's been NDP (or Judy Wacywhatever-Leis) every time there's been an election.

But the fact is that people usually vote governments (parties) out...hence the change in parties.

Of course some people just stay home and vote against their party that way.

Selinger ain't Doer, so he loses on that front imo.

And on a comparison with McFadyen, he's about even I'd say. (both being pretty weak)

sounds about right. I think we can all agree that PCs would be winning hands down if they had picked someone other then hughie

Wow. If Hughie indeed loses, it'll be a hot time in the party after that.

However. I don't see that happening. Trying not to anyway.

But, I can see Hughie as Premier...no problem there.

From an image point of view, Hughie wins hands down imo. Selinger looks like he's in the 80's with his choice of shirts and ties...out-of-date to me, looks bad.

Does this mean that if Hughie wins then the tax payers will have pay for new outfits to keep the leader fashionable?
