Hey man, that's cool. You obviously don't have much respect for those that take care of you when you are sick. You are entitled to your opinion and I'm not going to argue with you on this, but it does surprise me that some can't even realize that they play a big and special roll in taking care of the public. They deserve more respect than many give them.

My last job (a few years ago now since I moved), we had five different managers during the time that I worked there. It was very eye-opening the difference in "tone" that a manager can make in a unit. Even comparing a good manager to a different good manager, it felt different going to work, the way we went about our jobs was different. Same unit, same patients, all that changed was the manager.

When the unit was not being very well managed, we were stressed and unhappy. But also, complaints from the public went up as well. Because if you are rattled because your boss just screamed at you in public in full view of all your co-workers or something like that, how do you focus, how do you even begin to provide empathy to others. It is so hard. It is easy to make safety and medication errors in situations like that also.

And really, life is too short. Nobody wants stress ulcers.

From a management perspective, you really do WANT your unhappy staff to move on to places where they will be happy. Who wants to manage a bunch of stressed, unhappy workers. The fact that the bosses didn't heed the advance warnings they were given and look at why people were leaving and/or recruit new staff really does not speak well for management.

Because I've actually worked in healthcare (many many moons ago) I have a perspective that those that have not worked in healthcare may not have.

The nature of work most hospital nurses engage in could not be handled by the average bear.

Every sort of nasty human foible is encountered on a regular basis. Most nurses display an inordinate amount of patience and compassion on a daily basis.

The tasks nurses are charged with can be nasty; cleaning up geriatric patients; treating injured children; changing dressings on burn patients to name but three.

This profession is not to be arbitrarily dismissed nor is it comparable to your average career.

Nurses, most anyway, are super-heros in my book.

If people still hold others up on a pedistal, we will continue to have these sorts of problems and discussions.

Nobody should be put on such a platform. imo

Who said I cant realize they play a big roll in taking care of the public? Thats the WHOLE REASON I AM SO PISSED AT THESE ASSHATS. They knowingly endangered the lives of every single Manitoban.

So Farmers who work 72 hour days at harvest time to ensure you have food...they aren;t thought right? They are nothing because they dont wipe bums?

EVERY single solitary position and job in our economy is important and needed, without the bus driver the nurse would not get to work, without the road construction the buses would not go, without the gas jockey the road construction would not go, without the stock boy there would be no food for the nurses to buy off the shelves....

Get the point yet?

As some of you know my Dad is very ill right now and has been in the hospital for a month. The nurses (with the exception of 1) have been amazing. They take my calls anytime I call, night or day, they answer any question I may have. When I go up on weekends I bring them Tim Hortons to show my appreciation for everything they do! When my Dad gets cranky and says not so nice things I apologize to them for his behavior even though they ensure me they don't take it personally.

I could never ever do that job and I cannot thank them enough for all they do and put up with! They deserve every penny they earn and then some.

"Nurses, most anyway, are super-heros in my book."

right there... right when you put Nurses up on a pedestal over and above everyone else. For there to be super-heros there has to be normal people, who are the normal people if not for every other worker?

I agree with GOM...they are almost like super heroes. I have such an appreciation for what they do and what they have to put up with! I couldn't imagine doing what they do for 12 hours a day...

Here is what I also said: "This profession is not to be arbitrarily dismissed nor is it comparable to your average career."

Don't be reading sh1t into my words because you have a burr in your saddle.

Its not a burr in my saddle. These nurses put everyone lives at risk. THAT is not how to define a superhero.

Dean, why do you blame the low level employees and not hold management accountable here?

Deank

The low level employees were the ones that walked away. Had they stayed, ensured that replacements were trained and then walked away, I would totally be 100% behind them but they put Manitobans at risk, simply because they had the EASY ability to work in another department.

Had they had to actually work at that ability, they would have sucked it up a tiny bit before moving on.

Management came up with a good plan to ensure the better health of all Manitobans. These particular nurses simply did not like that plan.

You're talking out of no knowledge of what they actually did do. (Considering there has also been no follow-up in the freep). Why isn't management to blame for not addressing the concerns and for not recruiting new staff in a timely manner?

The old staff left, new staff were needed to be trained by other workers.

So why doesn't management have new staff in place if they know their old staff are openly saying they want to leave.

Ahhhhh, you're speaking about a very specific situation, one of which I know nothing about.

I was speaking about nurses in general, and even more specifically, about hospital nurses.

That would be the nurses contract that they agreed to. Recently when someone suggested they go away from the 12 hour shifts.. LOTS of nurses disagreed.

I did not mean to ask you.
This is the first time I saw the comment about the nurses "putting up" with a lot while working 12 hour days.
If they think working 12 hour days is too much, they can always change it in the next contract.

I don't think there have been any comments about excess hours...
