A lady at work is getting hitched and mentioned that her wedding dress is costing $5000.

Just seems like a lot. I wonder how crappy a $500 dress would be.

Is this lady being ripped-off or is the price not unusual?

I wonder what price ranges one would find in Winnipeg. I think my daughter's dress was around $2000, and was a gift paid for by her grandmother.

My wife paid $400 for her dress and I thought it was simple and stunning.

I can understand $400-$500. Five grand sounds like a rip-off to me. Maybe I'm in the wrong business.

I'm of the same mind...up to a grand maybe...if that. The rest is ego and profit.

I hope it isn't an indication of how the bride will be in the future eh.

My wife's dress was $1500 and that was 16 years ago, it was not much more then a basic dress. She looked beautiful in it.

Exactly. I would love to see a bride try and justify a $5000 dress.

I think the entire meal at my wedding was just slightly over $5000 and we served 110 people a 4 course meal with filet mignon as the entree.

I served 450 people and the left overs were used for the snack at midnight... cost about $4000.

My wife's was $800, and she looked beautiful in it too. Even better later that night when she got out of it!

Funny thing is, this woman seems proud that the dress is costing 5 grand. I hope she can change her mind.

I guess the wedding industry has to cost at least as much as the divorce industry....

Some women will stop at nothing for their vision of the "big day"... my only hope is that the marriage is good enough to do justice to The Day.

I'm a cheap and unromantic a$$hole. I eloped and between the licence and the roll of film, our wedding cost $100.

No dress. No regrets about not blowing wads of cash on something that didn't mean anything to me in the first place.

ETA: You could claim I'm pragmatic. I'd rather have the money to put into a downpayment on a house or to erradicate student debt.

I am with you Sourpuss...my hubby and I were married in our living-room and I wore a dress I already owned. We had close friends stand up for us and then dined on Thai food.

The next day we had a backyard party and supplied the food and booze. All in all it cost us 500.00 for everything. I have no regrets and couldn't imagine spending thousands on a wedding.

I didn't even do that.

I just bought a new tie to go with the suit I already had in my closet.

My wife and I also had a backyard type wedding. Family and close friends only. Her dress was around $400 too. Short simple ceremony, followed by an all night party. No regrets for us either, zero debt from our wedding. I really can't see how some of these people go 50k into the hole for a friking wedding.

Well it seems that posters on this forum have way too much "common sense"! Good for all of you!

It warms the dark crevices of my heart to see that we weren't the only ones who thought it was a waste of money and common sense having a frou frou wedding. When we got married 10 years ago, the average Canadian wedding was $25K. That is a fantastic downpayment. Why would you do that for a one day party (that, often, ends in an expensive divorce) to celebrate yourself? If you/your folks can afford it, great. My folks make good money, but this would have cost them money for a long, long time.

I asked The Husband a few weeks ago what we would do if one of our daughters wanted a froufrou wedding, and he said "pay them to have an elopement."
