From the public apology issued by the "leadership and players" of the Neepawa Natives.

"We would like to make it clear that the events that had taken place had no malicious intent and, in no way, were aimed to harm or ridicule any player on our team.

"First and foremost, no player was forced or threatened to take part in anything they were not comfortable doing, this was and remains a team policy from the start of the season. The victims of the incident participated in the events that took place in the month of September on their own will and were not pressured in any way by any member of the team. We are truly sorry for allowing this kind of immature behavior to happen in our dressing room."

Not aimed to ridicule any player???? Sure, everyone walks around the dressing room with a water bottle rack tied to their bag.

No one was forced to participate and the victims participated of their own free will??? The kid was 15, he had visions of the NHL, do these goofs not understand the desires of a child to belong, do they not understand the impact that a coach or person in any form of authority has.

Time to blow up that organization and fire anyone tied to that ridiculous "apology". They are obviously oblivious to what they have done.

Agreed!

Remember, this is the same team that demanded the player apologize to the team for his dad's squealing on him.

How rampant is this sort of thing? Will other teams come forward before the players do?

A school sports team I am aware of made the guys ( 15 year olds ) wear dresses and wigs and makeup and go out soliciting money for a charity at a local mall.

I think there's a mentality that exits that says, I went through it when I was their age, so whats the problem.

On the other extreme, youth soccer put a rule in place to have "bench moms". iF a girls teamed is coached by males, then they must have a female present on the bench and vice versa.

Really, if someone wants to be inappropriate with, they are likely to do it during a soccer match, on the bench, in full view of the other players, the opposing team and all the parents sitting on the other side of the field. But I can call a practice of my girls team and not have anyone else present, regardless of gender.

Time for sport organizations to enter the real world...starting with hockey.

very rampant it seems....this time not related to sports, but camping!

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1081073--do-you-know-what-your-kids-did-last-summer?bn=1

"Counsellors at Camp Chimo in Markham, Ont., a city-run day camp for
children aged six to 14, allowed a game to play out in which campers
sucked a male counsellor's toe, licked bathroom walls and another
camper's armpit in order to get ice cream"

Difference is the adult isn't humiliated and taunted into being pied and tied.

There is harmless pranks and there is what happened in Neepawa, common sense will allow most people to tell the difference.

Whats harmless about being tied to a goalpost against your will?
And then having shaving cream shoved into your mouth, nose and eyes again against your will.
IMO, if you want to honor a persons birthday, take him/her out for lunch and pay for his/her meal. Then both you AND him/her will have fun.

The difference is these guys are adults, and they are peers. (but the 6'4" 300 lb lineman might have a slight advantage) Nothing wrong with some harmless fun, or good practical joke....amongst adults.

The hockey thing was people in a position of authority (team captain, asst captain, coaching staff) subjecting a child to a painful and sexually humiliating act. And in spite a $5,000 fine, suspensions, dismissals, rejection by sponsors and their community, they still refuse how wrong and unacceptable their actions were.

But the kids are just trying to imitate the adults.
Its all "fun" until someone gets hurt.
And then the offender comes up with the old B.S. excuse of "I was only teasing".
Just once I would like to see someone sue the offender and teach him/her a lesson they would never forget.
And yes I would say a 300 lb lineman would have advantage over a 200 lb receiver.

This incident will end this juvenile sporting behaior across the country. It already did. Coaches will now be hyper-sensitive to it and ensure it doesn't happen. Plus players will as well - given that it will likely backfire on them. It's about time this ended.

This sh1t has been rampant for a long time. When my younger brother played rep hockey, there was some horrific sh1t that went on in the changerooms and off the ice. Everyone knew, and nobody did a damn thing. "Boys will be boys!!"

When I applied to ROTP back in the 90's, my mother was really, really worried about the hazing that went on in the military, and that something horrible would happen to me. Lucky for her, I didn't end up going to Kingston because I was a lazy bugger.

The army was always good for some stupid stuff. Some of it was just good fun (trying to blow up a shitter with someone inside, sending the FNG running around trying to get his M card), and some of it went way too far, like the incidents reported about the Airborne Regiment.

In most cases, it was "supervised" by crusty NCO's who were there to protect the young soldiers as much as they were there to teach them. I found most of the extreme stuff happened amongst young officers or when they interferred with NCO's trying to do their jobs.
