1 Winnipeg Traffic on Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:22 pm

We complain about traffic in Winnipeg, yet other cities laugh about our 30 minute comutes.

Can we dare to say that Winnipeg traffic can be improved? Do we really have it good?

I feel we are at the burden of poor traffic light planning and that the ony reason we have relatively short commutes is because the Winnipeg area is small, compareable. It's tough to say when you are 100 cars back at every light on Lagemodier all the way from Bishop Grandin to the Chief Pegus Trail during periods of rush hour.

How can Winnipeg organize it's rush hour traffic problems for the future? It's only going to get worse, of course. Should we be investing now? Do we have the money?

Thoughts?

6 million (5yearsago cost) is all it would take to bring all our traffic lights into the 21 st century. this would allow remote programable changes to lights. it would not solve verythng but it would make a significant dent in he problems

Secondary question: The use of cadets to ease trafic congestion in highly regular congestion areas during certain times 3-4?

Eg: Bishop grandin/St Marys and St annes intersections, Lag everywhere, St James st at elice, Notre Dame, Mcphillips, Pembina

They spent alot of money for them traffic cameras... Why not spend some money for the traffic light upgrade?

I can now go along the ONE kilometer seafront here in Trieste in a couple of minutes. Before the improvement, it took 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the traffic jams.

ONE kilometer...

too expensive and the cadets would hav to fight traffic to get here

sorry I disagree, they are cadets, can't be making that much, and they have lights and sirens, they could get there.

Seems to me that cops in the city hate having anything to do with directing traffic

Yes, use cadets, or cops, to direct complex traffic scenes. If "real" cops are too expensive then create a "traffic" division of non-cops.

Lose half the traffic lights in this city. Then synchronize the remaining lights.

Continue the RT investment. Begin creating an inner-ring road with freeway-like propensities. The roadways already exist. Just eliminate the many grade level intersections and shut the too many access points.

I wonder what would be the cost of a Police 'Traffic' Squadron.

Hire a group of 10-15 people or so with good quailty city of Winnipeg pensioned/benefits jobs. Pay them $5 an hour above minimum wage with no increases except for when min wage goes up.

Their job: manage traffic. So easy that there should be a plethora of applicants.

Is there merit in an idea like this? I am sure the cost of hiring these people would be tens of times less than studies, technology, etc.

I'm quite sure that the police union would have some comments on that.

Yup. The unions are all about protecting their jobs. Be nice if there was some consideration for the employer's needs...

This is the problem with some of the unions. Mostly a cut off their nose to spite their face response.

And usually, its a problem with the decision makers who don't want to challenge the unions.

Then make it separate from police? True though the money would have to come from somewhere, police union would say its being funnelled away from their own budgets or something. They need more fuel for that helicopter.

Encourage the employers in the city to stagger the work day so more workers are commuting off-peak hours.

Keep on improving rapid transit.

Teach people how to frickin drive! (Sorry, my road rage acting up again)

Same problem, police union would still complain that you have untrained "civilians" interfering with jobs that should be done by highly trained and highly paid police officers, and many of them.

Rush hour traffic is getting worse in the city. The new cheif peguis trail extension has created 20 minute back ups at CPT and Main street during rush hour.

That is the traffic light thing this city is so fond of. That intersection should be a proper freeway interchange and not traffic light controlled.

But isn't that attributable to some a$$hole traffic engineer, who said, if we build this extension, that will provide for more traffic on CPT and the bridge rather than other routes (Redwood, Disraeli, and the Perimeter), but we won't make any provision for the increased traffic at the approach (Main) Isn't this where the blame should lie, and with the people who hired the incompetent people?

Question. . in the link Deank posted, there was mention of sychronized intersections along "Pembina Highway from River to rue des Trappistes".

I know Pembina Highway pretty well, but cannot recall anywhere that Pembina Highway intersects with either River Road or River Ave. Could someone enlighten me? Is there some other River that meets up with Pembina Highway? Or does it mean "The River" (although I don't recall Pembina intersecting with either of the rivers, either).

They have made a couple of intersections worse. Pembina/Jubilee is off, so that backs up Pembina/Point (both NB Pembina intersections)

Same thing at Pembina/University and Pembina/Chancellor NB. In fact the light for Pembina NB @ Chancellor is shorter than the Chancellor light!!!

The inner ring road will be completed by 2016.

I guess with all the water park talk it was missed!

That is excellent news. Will proper interchanges be used or more traffic lights?

I bet it will be lights...

Of course, this suggests it's time to invest in a traffic light supply company!
