This relates to the current invasion of US equity into Canada.

Recent media reports annouce the aquisitions and purchases of Canadian companies from US firms.

I predict: People say that these retailers (Target, etc) move into Canada to offer lower prices which in turn slowly eliminates competition. The USD currency is artificially low right now and set this way by the US Gov. This is why the Canadian dollar is so strong. When the US gov raises rate and gets out of their recession their currency will appreciate. The Canadian dollar will be low, bad for importers. Prices will rise at the US stores and by this time not many Canadian owned firms will be left. A successful take over of the Canadian market by US firms, they have done it in many nations.

bounce

A takeover by US firms and lower prices is a good thing!

Look at Menard's recent flyer and compare how much less it costs in the USA for poor quality Chinese made crap!

Canada has an export-based economy. We want our dollar as low as possible to help exports, which is why our prime interest rate has been the lowest possible for the last couple of years. It's why the dollar was fixed at $0.925 US through the 1960s, not at par.

The moment the American economy picks up and they start raising the value of their currency, the Bank of Canada will do the same. More slowly though; we want the Canadian dollar to drop well below the US one.

For now we have a stronger economy, so it's a better investment to put box stores here rather than the US. Not just by the Americans - look at Ikea in Winnipeg for example. Before the American recession we had no hope of getting one.

That and a dollar at par makes us a good place to temporarily park a hockey team until the American recession ends.
